Hebrews 10:23-24 - Hold Fast v 23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) v 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Let us hold fast - the thought here is to cling to the faith professed and the hope without wavering. ‘Hold fast’ is to cling with all of your spirit soul, and body to the one {Jesus} without whom we would have no faith. ‘without wavering, is just like it sounds, do not back away or turn aside from your faith because of some unforeseen circumstance. We must be aware that the world does not like or want us to have faith in anything but ourselves. This very thought will only lead to failure and destruction. Since God is so faithful to us, we ought to be faithful to him {God}. We are dependent on him for the grace and mercy to hold fast to our profession. If he were to prove unfaithful, we would have no strength to do it {hold fast to our profession of faith}. But this {unfaithful} he never been; and we may rest assured that all that he has promised {eternal life} he will perform. ‘consider one another‘ - Let each of us care for others and exhort them to love and to do good works both by word and example. The best of these is example. People are always looking at you, and if your life portrays a Christ like quality this alone can speak volumes about you. But don’t forsake the word as a second tool. I have seen many christians that will beat people about the head and shoulders with the ’word’ and their lives do not reflect a christian walk with our Lord. “To provoke unto love“ - ‘provoke’ as the world uses it now means to stir one to anger or resentment of another. ‘provoke’ in the time of Jesus has a whole different meaning. Its original meaning is, to arouse, to excite, to call into action, and it is used here in this sense. The Greek is, literally, "unto a paroxysm of love"; the word paroxysm means excitement or impulse; and the idea is, that they were to endeavour to arouse or excite each other to love. Men are sometimes afraid of excitement in religion. But there is no danger that Christians will ever be excited to love each other too much, or to perform too many good works. |
