I do not see anything wrong with social interractions of that sort but it is generally over exagerated. The Spanish language has it right. I take German and the whole thing is messed up there. The reasons are: 1) There is no word for friend that is not gender related. 2) The only words for friend (male) or friend (female) also means boyfriend and girlfriend. 3) There is no viable way to get around this block without getting laughed out of the room by any nearby German speakers.
