Earlier this year I hailed Rayman Legends as being superior to the recent 2D Mario games. And even though I had that 2D qualifier in there, I suppose it’s fitting that Super Mario 3D World has supplanted Legends as the best platform game this year. This is a magnificent installment in the Mario franchise, comparable to the Wii’s outstanding Galaxy series. Very much in the same style of the 3DS’ Mario 3D Land, World improves on that excellent game with incredible, varied level design, clever new power ups, and some of the best visuals Nintendo has ever produced. Levels are generally more linear than some of the previous 3D Mario games, but the designs are extraordinary, with the game spreading unique ideas throughout the entirety of its length. The most immediately striking gameplay additions are the new power ups. The cat suit has been the trademark of the game’s marketing and it’s a fantastic concept. Players can claw enemies, perform dive attacks, and even climb walls for a short time. It adds a new element to the usual Mario gameplay that effortlessly changes the game. Perhaps even more intriguing is the double cherry, which adds a clone that follows your every move. There were times that, after finding multiple cherries, I was guiding four or five Mario’s through a stage. Talk about chaos. And speaking of chaos, the multiplayer has to be the best the franchise has ever seen. Taking a page out from Super Mario Bros. 2 (The US version, that is), players can choose between Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad. Each has their own unique abilities and playing through the stages with others completely alters the feel of the game. Each player receives a score at the end of the stage, giving it a fun (and frantic) competitive edge. Despite its impressive amount of content, 3D World is consistently engaging and surprising. There are fantastic boss levels, time trials stages, ghost houses and even Captain Toad levels that require the player to rotate the level to guide the Cap to different stars. I also loved the stage map, which allows for free movement and contains many hidden stages for those who explore off the beaten track. The stages themselves are also filled with alternate paths and hidden goodies. Finding them is a consistently rewarding experience. Like the Galaxy games, 3D World also has an outstanding score, energetically performed by a live orchestra. This time there’s a decidedly jazzy style, but it’s exceptional all the same. World is also the first true HD version of 3D Mario, and it looks amazing. The textures and visual effects are outstanding and the colors pop with vibrancy. Super Mario 3D World is a triumph of imaginative design, perfect control, and exceptional artistic and technical design. It’s easily the best game on Wii U and you simply will not find a more fun and enjoyable game anywhere else. |
