For all the crap developer Treyarch has taken about not being as talented or accomplished as Infinity Ward, they've never made a bad Call of Duty game. For those unfamiliar with the franchise's developmental history, Infinity Ward was responsible for the first two entries, along with the Modern Warfare games. Treyarch made the third game, along with World at War and the most recent Black Ops. While the status of Infinity Ward has been called into question recently thanks to the departure of nearly half of their entire development team, it's clear that the franchise is still in very capable hands. Each of Treyarch's subsequent entries have greatly improved over the one that came before it, and Black Ops easily stands up to the Infinity Ward offerings. Black Ops is really a direct sequel to the company's World at War and takes place during the Cold War era. Black Ops has slightly different feel from previous offerings in the series, carving out its own path as a legitimate white-knuckle action thriller as opposed to the soldier simulator approach the previous games provided. It's far less realistic in many regards, but it also packs some phenomenal over-the-top sequences. This change seems to have benefited the story in particular, as it easily tells the best tale the franchise has seen. There is an emphasis on character here that has been absent in the briefing style story progression of the previous games and it works very well. The game gets some very good performances from the likes of Sam Worthington and Gary Oldman to make it that much more effective. Visuals and sound are top of the line as we expect from this franchise, although the score is generally forgettable and some of the sound effects, perhaps appropriately, drown out some of the dialog. Black Ops is an easy recommendation for fans of the franchise and of shooters in general. It's a thrilling experience from start to finish with some inspired set pieces and a worthy story. Plus, the awesome zombie survival mode from World at War returns! It may not be Infinity Ward, but it's hard to imagine even they could do much better than this. |
