I don't get the impression that many gamers are aware of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. A fun action-adventure, Enslaved doesn't raise the bar in any gameplay area, but it's certainly enjoyable enough to earn a recommendation. Gameplay is generally broken down into platforming and combat sequences. Combat is the more enjoyable of the two, with some very stylish and satisfying take-downs. Buy the focus attack as soon as possible! The combat controls are extremely simple, but the presentation really makes up for this. As simple as the combat is, the platforming is even more so and a bit too forgiving for my tastes. Your character will not jump if he can't make it. Which means that you can very quickly traverse environments with very little concern or thought. The gameplay is very linear and streamlined. It's clear that developer Ninja Theory was very aware of pacing and wanted to replicate the feel of the Uncharted games. Gameplay is nowhere near what we've seen from that franchise, but it does feature a story that approaches the same standard. Loosely based on the Chinese story, Journey to the West, the game is well-written by novelist and screenwriter Alex Garland and directed by Andy Serkis. Yes, the man behind Gollum and King Kong. Serkis also stars in the game along with Lindsey Shaw and both give fantastic performances. I really enjoyed their characters and they have a great chemistry. It's also worth noting that their motion captured performances are brilliantly brought to life with some of the best facial animation in the history of gaming. A fun game on its own, the fantastic story and presentation really make Enslaved a game worth checking out. |
