A re-imagining of both Rareware's Nintendo 64 classic and the film it's based on, Eurocom's GoldenEye for Wii doesn't top either of its predecessors in terms of gameplay or story, but is a fun first-person shooter nonetheless. The game gets off to a great start with the Dam level, an excellent combination of stealth FPS, shootouts and seamlessly integrated cinematics. Unfortunately, storywise, the game goes downhill from there. Eurocom has shown a talent for storytelling (The overlooked, but solid Dead Space: Extraction comes to mind), but despite the good source material much of the story seems shortchanged and underdeveloped, especially considering how well it's presented early on. Gameplay is far more consistent, providing an experience that can rival the fun of the original game, but at times devolves to the kind of uninspired 'clear the room of enemies' setup that plagued the likes of Treyarch's Quantum of Solace game. But fear not, this is a far better game than QoS ever is, with some very fun sequences and the return of actual objectives. Sure most of them are just snapping pics with Bond's awesome smart phone (remotely hack turrets and locks!), but it gives the game a bit more of an espionage feel. Stealth is very well utilized in the game, and the customizable and precise controls are noteworthy. While the visuals are a bit muddy, some of the character animations and gun models are exceptional. GoldenEye on Wii won't leave the same impression of either the N64 original or of Pierce Brosnan's 007 debut, but it's a fun title and among the best shooters you'll find on Wii. |
