Remember last year when I was disappointed with God of War III? It was a second sequel that just couldn't match the brilliance of its predecessor. And while I wouldn't call Killzone 2 a brilliant game, Killzone 3 is a far bigger disappointment. Killzone 2 did a couple very important things right, and chief among them was that it didn't try to be Call of Duty. It distinguished itself by embracing its sci-fi setting. There were cool weapons, weird levels and some very cool enemy design that actually required strategy. Killzone 3 fails at all of the above. Enemies almost entirely consist of the standard Helghast shock troopers and the level design is totally uninspired. The supposedly big addition of a jet pack is only utilized about twice in the game, and the level design doesn't even take proper advantage of it. Forget the cool boss battles in 2, there are none to be found here. In addition to the undeveloped gameplay, there are also a few aspects of Killzone 3 that suggest it was a rush job. The sound mixing is horrendous. Dialog is terribly, terribly, terribly presented, volume levels go from way too soft to ungodly loud, sound effects seem to drop out constantly and the score is buried underneath it all. The visuals are pretty decent, but your NPC squad members feature some very poor animation. The story is a complete trainwreck. The villains' side isn't quite as offensive because it actually features a couple good actors in Ray Winstone and Malcom McDowell, but dear god is the hero side awful. There is some atrocious writing and horrendous acting here. The ending is also laughably abrupt and unsatisfying. All of this yields a completely forgettable first-person shooter with enough nagging problems to instill genuine disgust. Killzone 2 was a very good FPS and Killzone 3 isn't even in the same galaxy. |
