Let's just get it out of the way.

The ending of Mass Effect 3 has become infamous. Fan disappointment was apparently so prevalent that BioWare has agreed to add additional downloadable content this Summer that will flesh out, but not change, the conclusion of the story.

Without spoiling anything, here are my thoughts.

The story of Mass Effect 3 is absolutely brilliant...up until the last 15 minutes. Before the final push it contains all the thrills and character that has represented the series so well. In fact it is actually the most dramatically powerful entry, with many characters meeting their ultimate fate via brilliant and emotional writing and directing.

I think the most disappointing aspect of the ending for me is that the supporting cast, namely your crew, gets severely shortchanged. These are characters that have been so well-developed over the course of three games and I was surprised they were pushed into the background of the finale.

While I actually don't have a problem with where the story ends, I feel like it should have been more fleshed out. Your team played such a huge part in the game and they deserved to play a bigger role in the conclusion.

The end just isn't as thrilling as the previous two games, nor is it as emotional as what has come before it in this very game. So it just feels a bit hollow and, dare I say, rushed. There really isn't even a final boss fight.

It's really a shame that the last taste of the Mass Effect trilogy is a step below what we have come to expect from this series.

That said, Mass Effect 3 is still a brilliant game with a ton of great content and, for the most part, an excellent story. Even at its low point, it's 10 times better than the average game.

I think some of the rabid fans should remember this. The people at BioWare have crafted the finest original story in the history of games over the course of three titles. The ending not meeting our extraordinarily lofty expectations is only a slight blemish on what is otherwise a masterpiece that has raised the standards for all games that come hereafter.
