Last month the Resident Evil franchise took another step towards completely abandoning its roots. Now in its seventh major entry (Yes, I count Code: Veronica. Sue me), the series bears little-to-no resemblance to the atmospheric survival horror gameplay that defined the series. Starting with Resident Evil 4, the franchise began a turn towards pure action. 4, however, struck a nice blend of new and old, still retaining an intense, horrifyingly isolated experience. With 5 and 6, the games have become Call of Duty with monsters. Relentless action with little atmosphere and intelligence define the modern entries. While Resident Evil 6 makes some improvements upon 5, specifically in regards to the atrocious item management and pathetic partner AI, it still shuns the series' horror roots and puzzle-based gameplay in favor of hordes of enemies and an extreme over-reliance on QTEs. Resident Evil 6 presents four different campaigns, all of which intersect at some point or another. The one involving Leon S. Kennedy and newcomer Helena is probably the best, but that may just be thanks to its throwback storyline which reintroduces zombies. Remember when these games had zombies? The weakest by far is Chris Redfield's campaign, which is a barrage of mindless action sequences. It also features the worst storyline in the game. Chris Redfield has been the most prominent character in the franchise and he has still yet to be given a personality. Please Capcom, no more Chris. He sucks, he's boring and we'd much rather see his sister Claire again. The story is never as abysmal as the recent 3DS entry, Revelations, but it's still well in-line with our low expectations for this franchise. Resident Evil 6 isn't a bad game, but it continues to move further and further away from what made the series great. It's an entertaining action game with some exciting moments to be sure, but its over-the-top action and lack of horror, puzzles and even atmosphere is supremely disappointing. |
