Well this one caught me off guard. Even as a fan of Far Cry 2 and its open world shooter design, I was completely blown away by Far Cry 3. This sequel fully realizes the potential introduced by its predecessor and it results in the best game I played last year.

Where Far Cry 3 succeeds foremost is in its world design. Exploring the vast and scenic Rook Island is enthralling. The variety and attention to detail is astounding. The visuals are a triumph both in terms of graphical prowess and artistic wonder. If, like me, you live for games that value exploration above all else, you need to play this one right now. Every part of the map contains unique and engaging discoveries.

The shooter mechanics have also been vastly improved. Controls are quick and responsive and the stunning melee 'takedown' system is a superb addition. You earn/select skill sets for just about every aspect of the game, but the ones for the takedowns are perhaps the most exciting to unlock. One gives you the ability to pull the pin on an enemy's grenade and kick the guy away from you. Bad. Ass.

Thankfully these takedowns are extremely valuable because the enemy detection system has been fixed from the previous game. You can sneak around at will and the enemy awareness indicator is very well designed.

Guns are also a joy to utilize with a a ton of options in terms of models and their various attachments.

If that's not enough, there is also a hunting element where you can craft various ammunition holders and item rucksacks using skins and pelts. You can even harvest plants to create serums that recover strength and enhance abilities.

Oh yeah, and there is the main game itself, which is very well done. Missions provide good variety and a few yield the level of cinematic thrills we would expect from an Uncharted game. What other open world game can say that?

One memorable moment finds your character burning down an enemy's Marijuana fields with a flamethrower. When Make it Bun Dem starts blaring it makes for a ridiculously amazing moment. And standing downwind from the burning field totally throws off your aim. Hilarious.

The story is surprisingly engaging as well. Despite its cheesy introduction, the plot goes into some bizarre territory and I applaud its fearlessness to deliver a very mature and uniquely-presented story. The off the wall, Tarentino-esque villains are great, especially the frighteningly insane Vaas.

I also have to praise the game for making such great use of the first-person perspective. The previous game really made you feel like you were more than just a floating gun and Far Cry 3 further establishes this. It's just very cool to see you character interact on fly in realistic ways. Patting out a flaming sleeve, the various takedowns, bandaging wounds or barely grabbing a ledge and using a foot hold to hoist yourself up are some examples. This game gets an A+ for immersion.

I could go on and on, but I'll leave some of the great discoveries to you (I didn't even mention the wing suit yet!).

Far Cry 3 is a superb game and whether you are new to the series or not (The story is completely standalone), it's a must play. Highly recommended.
