Well I finally feel that I can close the book on 2012. I caught up on a few games and feel pretty strongly about these choices. These are my picks for the best games of last year. Best Writing: Mass Effect 3 Despite its controversial and admittedly disappointing ending, the vast majority of Mass Effect 3 is brilliantly written. It puts most games to shame with its intelligence and character. It also builds on the foundation of the previous games to deliver some genuinely powerful emotion. Best Performance: The entire cast of Mass Effect 3 With the trilogy coming to a close, the uniformly excellent voice work must be acknowledged. Although no single performance stands above the rest, this cast is perhaps the best to ever grace a game. Best Score: Journey - Austin Wintory Journey is all about the power of visuals and sound and the dynamic emotions they can evoke. Journey's score is enthralling whether mysterious, mournful or triumphant. It is the game's most integral component. Best Art Direction: Journey Stunningly and hauntingly beautiful, Journey's visuals are supremely compelling. Both these elements together form an incredible union and an arresting and transcendent atmosphere that few games have ever achieved. Best Graphics: Far Cry 3 Far Cry 3 puts other open world games to shame. The scale of its world is massive and majestic and yet its detail superb. Environments are rich with texture and lighting and character animation is fluid and convincing. Best Sound: Journey Once again incredible atmosphere rules here. While there were myriad games with impressive, bombastic sound, Journey's simplicity leaves an even greater impression. The excellent mixing and effects draw the player in and continue to hold them through the game's breathless pilgrimage. Best Game: Far Cry 3 A thrilling and enthralling experience, Far Cry 3 merges the best elements of open world and first person action gameplay. The game has incredible depth or customization while still delivering cinematic thrills. But best of all is the exploration. Rook Island is an endlessly compelling playground.
