Impressive visuals and extraordinary sound highlight the often overbearing Dead Space 3. From its snowy landscapes to its ominous abandoned facilities, the latest entry in the horror series every bit looks the part of a worthy successor. Even better is the thunderous sound design, which may be among the best ever heard in a game. Unfortunately, the gameplay cannot match the superb production values. The core of Dead Space 3 feels like more of the same in many ways. That wouldn't be so bad, but in an attempt to bring the series to broader appeal, the atmospheric, isolated style of the previous entries has been lessened considerably. Action is the name of the game this time around. Expect endless hordes of enemies to pop out from behind every corner of every room you visit. It becomes tiresome. Without the silence and anticipation to punctuate the action, Dead Space 3 loses the palpable sense of dread the series became known for. The game is still well made for the most part, but one can't help but be disappointed with the shift towards more anonymous action material over true survival horror. One aspect of the gameplay that has been improved, however, is customization. The system for weapon design and enhancement is superb and surprisingly deep. In staying in line with the series (unfortunately), Dead Space 3 features atrocious writing and suspect voice work. Characters range from bland to nonsensical and downright irritating. The plot is stock to say the least. For fans of the franchise, Dead Space 3 is probably still worth playing despite its flaws, but this sequel takes more steps back that it does forward. |
