Assassin's Creed III

I've never been a huge fan of this franchise. To me, they are pretty standard open-world fare. While they certainly deliver big, impressive environments to look at, the boring, repetitive mission structures fail to impress.

Even by my lower expectations, I was disappointed with this one. There is really no incentive in exploring this massive world and I just found myself running from objective marker to objective marker.

Even worse, the missions are frequently confusing. I was constantly failing objectives before I even knew what was going on. This rigid structure is amateur and frustrating.

And don't ask me what the hell the homestead development system is. The game's tutorial is baffling and I decided to ignore it completely.

As with the previous games, the present day storyline is a complete bore, while the period setting (This time the American Revolution) is fairly compelling.

I think the best addition here are the naval battles. It's no wonder the next game in the franchise will feature pirates.

Overall, a decent but disappointing game.

New Super Mario Bros. U

Well, it's 2D Mario. Not that it's a bad thing. This game is a lot of fun and about as good of a 2D platformer as you'll find on the market. I especially liked the game's throwbacks to Super Mario World, including its elaborate world map.

I do wish Nintendo would update this franchise a bit. The visuals are colorful and sharp, but also pretty much identical to the previous New Super Mario games. And is it too much to ask that they compose new music? What happened to that awesome orchestral sound in the wonderful Mario Galaxy series?

Oh well, at least it's a solid game.

Nintendo Land

Nintendo's demo reel for the Wii U is actually a pretty nice package. The variety and depth of gameplay is actually far greater than the similarly placed Wii Sports was.

Some of the games do a very nice job showing off the new tablet/controller hybrid.

My favorites? The supremely simple, but endlessly fun Mario Chase, the gorgeous Balloon Trip Breeze and the addictive Donkey Kong's Crash Course.

There are twelve games in total and all of them are pretty enjoyable. It makes for a nice demo reel of Wii U's unique capabilities and a darned good mini-game collection...especially considering some feature a surprising amount of content.
