Few games are a truly joyous experience. Rayman Legends is one of them.

This 2D platformer may feel a bit shallow compared to the best Mario titles, but Legends makes up for it with incredible style and personality. The game’s fast-paced, inventive design is bursting with energy and humor.

There is a seamless, sometimes relentless pace to the level design that harkens back to the glory days of Sonic the Hedgehog with the spectacle of Super Mario Galaxy.

There are even a handful of music-based levels where the action syncs perfectly with tunes. Think of it as an action-platforming version of Guitar Hero.

The James Bond-inspired underwater stages even introduce unexpected stealth elements that are also brilliantly realized.

Legends’ visuals are absolutely spectacular, with gorgeous art direction and sharp, vibrant graphics. This is a great example of how realism is absolutely not necessary to produce an eye-popping experience.

The score is also outstanding, elevating the experience with bold themes and enthusiastic orchestration. Once again I have to recall Mario Galaxy, which produced the same sense of peppy thrills.

The game also features great use of the Wii U Gamepad, with recurring levels that utilize the touch screen and gyroscopic controls to perfection. Originally a Wii U launch exclusive that was delayed for a multi-platform release, Legends’ roots are obvious. The Wii U version with its unique controls and additional content is the one to get without question.

I think my sole complaint would have to be that the game really doesn’t provide a show-stopping finale as much as it just ends. I’m sure this was somewhat justified given the lenient level progression (Worlds can be played out of order), but the game comes to an abrupt end nonetheless.

Thankfully, even after completing the main levels, there is a good amount of content to unlock. The best includes around 40 additional levels adapted from 2011’s Rayman Origins. These aren’t nearly as exciting as any of Legends’ original designs, but they make a great addition nevertheless.

Rayman Legends is an absolute must-play for platforming fans. It’s both a triumph of artistic direction and game design and is the most refreshing 2D platform game in recent memory.
