The Stars and Stripes have always burned brightly in the eyes of Aaron Baddeley. But he is not. Instead, just as he did in thanking "our lord and saviour Jesus Christ" after winning those two Australian Opens - the first as an amateur and the second in his rookie days as a professional - plus the Greg Norman International at the Lakes, he now thanks God.

"There is no way I would have made it through the past two years without Him," Baddeley said.

But Baddeley also lives in a commercial arena in which golfers are among the highest-paid sportsmen in the world.

So far this year on the US tour alone, 59 players have won more than $US1 million ($A1.8 million). Tiger Woods is leading the way with $12.2 million, although his earnings from commercial interests are estimated at $180 million a year. But then there is only one Tiger.

Unless you dare to dream, as Baddeley did as a 14-year-old, telling his old man that by the age of 21 he would be playing on the US tour.

Paul Galli, a Melbourne lawyer who fell into golf management because he was a friend of Australian Masters champion Bradley Hughes' family, also dreamt Magista Soccer Cleats Sale Online He pitched for Baddeley as a client, against the might of IMG, and won. He is family to the Baddeleys, not a numbers man in a suit.

Galli is already fielding media inquiries for interviews and interest from the commercial sector. Baddeley is the goods. But there is not a lot of space on his shirt or his golf bagBuy Nike Magista Shoes Online

"There is not a lot we can do until November, 2003, when his current contracts expire," Galli said.

"There are built-in components in those contracts, should he be playing the US PGA Tour, and we're happy with them.

"He is now going into the US tour financially viable."

Baddeley's commercial deals are primarily structured around Nike, whose balls, shoes and glove he uses. But a glance in his bag will tell you he mainly uses Titleist clubs, although he has no contract with them.

"We've got things to look forward to when the deals come up for renewal," Galli said. "It was a courageous decision to abandon Europe (the European tour where Baddeley was exempt until the end of 2003 by virtue of his victory in the Greg Norman International) and, at the end of the day, he backed himself to win a card to the US tour Launch Tropical Mercurial Sale."

There could be one new commercial deal in the not-so-distant future.

In the past couple of months, Baddeley has been wearing clothing bought off the rack at department stores, which is not entirely synonymous with golfing attire. Talks are under way with makers to perhaps kit him out in an Aaron Baddeley collection.

After all, there is the Greg Norman collection and perhaps it is worth remembering that only four years ago at Royal Adelaide, Baddeley played with the Shark in the pro-am before the 1998 Australian Open.

Baddeley's family nervously asked Norman afterwards whether he would pose for a photograph with their son. Norman did, and the picture is on the wall of the family home in Melbourne.

The media, myself included, have been somewhat sceptical of Baddeley's insistence that it is the US, rather than Europe, where he will launch his international career.

Comparisons have been drawn with Baddeley's amateur contemporary Adam Scott, who has already won three times in Europe. Scott is doing it right; Baddeley is not.
