There's always a scary amount of girls on these kinds of things. It's part of what scares me away from forums on places like MangaFox, 'cause I can't win arguments against them most of the time. |

That's pretty enviable, V. I lose even when I'm right. Terribly frustrating, but when a group comes together to insist on a point that either makes no sense or is completely wrong, not much one can do to claim victory most of the time. So I give up and avoid trouble now. |

Seems like their are more boys... at least if the votes where right... @sky: Don't take it to serious I just wanted something new to talk about and it's always interesting. For all of you who don't know yet I am a boy. Even if most of you previously presumed that I am a girl... But I don't really mind

Usually one guesses the gender by the information and impressions one gets about one another on the Internet. However, since anyone is allowed to express themselves freely it's natural that the borders between male and female blur. I just don't care about gender or names, so I usually address anyone with his/her nick and generally just with "he", since it's shorter and easier to type... If someone tells me his/her gender, then I'll use the "she". But it's surprising that you thought Mr. MINTJAM is a girl. Even the name implies he's male xD @apo: Why do you think so? What are your criteria for thinking "Someone talks like a girl"? |

If I watch Post #11 I think you are a girl because of the "I just kinda knew". But seeing your capsed line in post #14 I would say you're a boy... A lot of people seem to practically let you know if they're one or the other. I originally stuck to the 'my gender is a mystery' and total anonymity, until a group of high school girls on a forum made a poll and topic to debate my gender. I don't see why if you're a guy or a girl matters so much. Even if it is pretty obvious a lot of the time. |

I've had people debate about my gender, too, even after they got a picture of my face. It was surreal when a girl told me to butt out of a feminine topic because as a guy I obviously didn't understand (I wasn't agreeing with her at the time). My face was like "=_=" and then "O_o" and finally "XD" because there wasn't really much else to say to that besides "Are you an idiot in real life too or does the internet render you brainless?" I didn't go back there much after that. I suffer mental stress when I have to read posts full of stupid opinions and fallacious arguments. |

Well, gender (role) is a social construct, so as a matter of fact the only differences between men and women are the ones we make up. It's not surprising that some people will have a hard time trying to pick out the imaginary aspects of someone's writing in order to tell if they're male or female. An example...hmm... I think one way some people try to identify someone's gender is by how forceful the person is. For instance, I could be very strong in my opinions and uncompromising in my language and get pegged as a guy. Or around here I might use lots of emoticons and less confrontational language and get pegged as female. These traits aren't strictly male or female, but because of the social construct of gender, someone will identify a person as one gender based on them. The same goes for clothing, color choice (pink versus blue, all that -- did you know pink used to be considered a great color for boys?), manner of speaking, personality types, etc. So if you can't tell someone's gender from their writing or whatever, don't worry about it. Not everyone you come across will conform to stereotypes like the girly girl, manly man, tomboy, or metrosexual. |

I have to write 12 page research papers for 400 level lecture classes in college. I do need to write well enough to pass, so I certainly hope I'm good at it! Tetsuki, social gender is different from biological gender. Transgender people are people who were born and raised as one gender and felt it was not right for them, so they switched as much as they are able to with today's medical science. This has to do with adopting gender roles as well as physical characteristics for the sake of self-identification. However, speaking from a psychological standpoint, the difference between male and female abilities is virtually nonexistent. All people are individuals with or without gender. You do get a lot of sexist articles proclaiming that a man's brain works differently from a woman's with the implication that they are simply born like that and that will never change, but that isn't true. Women are as capable as men and vice versa in the brains department. It may be the same in the physical department as well, but sports are too segregated at this point to tell. Sexual dimorphism (physical difference between the sexes, like with birds or spiders) is very understated in homo sapiens, so it would not surprise me if women could compete with men in things like skiing or swimming if given the opportunity to rise to the occasion. Biologically, men have XY chromosomes and women have XX chromosomes. These determine physical sexual characteristics for the purposes of reproduction only. There is a tribe in South America (I think? I have not looked into it) where the women are aggressive warrior types and the men gossip and pay attention to fashion. That is socialization. |

Socialisation is somewhat of a headache. I do wonder where the norms for male and female social roles came from originally. In the physical department, I'd say there'd be some difference, as hormones play a big part. Women will often find it hard to keep muscle mass unless they keep up some level of effort, where as men will tend to just find themselves to be bulkier, finding it easier to maintain a set muscle mass. There's also the effect that hormones have on bone density. So in every day life, it probably seems women are less capable physically than men. Maybe they are, we won't really know until we see a true showdown of the sexes at their best. I'm a skinny little thing though, I'd probably lose physically to a lot of people, no matter the gender. Bleh. I hate how I can't see the poll on any other pages besides the first one. -posts and goes to look- Ohh, the girls are finally voting. The majority arises... I don't think genes have much to do with personality. How one writes or behaves depends solely on his/her experience, thoughts and several other aspects. But I think every language has invented words to show that difference. There are boyish / tomboyish girls and girly boys... But it tend to be like that in the past. I still know those old values: "Womans do the house" or the woman's three K's (kitchen, children, basement [in my language they all begin with K]). But due to the values of our current world there's less difference between men and women. Especially on the Internet those barriers blur, since everyone is "genderless", unless he or she proclaims his/her gender. Now, we build our personality from the moment we can clearly think (well, probably before then too, but we just can't confirm it), every impression we get change us. Our first values are our parents (usually), then teachers and friends and schoolmates. Sometime later there are news, Internet and a lot of other ways to gather those impressions. If a girl learned, that her mother is the one who rules the house, she'll probably grow up in a similar way, since she didn't learn it different. Like: People who know violence do violence themselves... (sad, but true in most cases). And their personality reflects in their way of thinking and speech of course. There are those, who try to "transcendent" that state, by trying to be expressionless / genderless, but normally humans can't lay off habits easily. So I think it all depends on the environment one was raised. (As a side note: If we could reproduce ourselves and be genderless, we would be like cancer, eventually destroying ourselves due to overpopulation. It's kind of a limiter so that something like that won't happen.) |

kycse, german, right? a lot of people (who aren't from the US or UK) on here seem to be german... in nature, there are examples of many different gender roles. for the most part, men are the protectors. this doesn't mean they are dominant. in the case of bees, there is a dominant queen and all the other bees, male or non-reproductive female, do the work in the hive. in lions, the females do the majority of the hunting and follow one male. personally, i'm of the opinion that your gender helps shape you the same way everything else in your life does. if you try to reject it, it comes back to bother you later. it isn't the only thing that shapes a person, but it is a contributing factor. no one can deny that. |

Yea I'm German, why? It is a factor. But I just wanted to say that it isn't the only factor determining someones personality. That depends again on which personality model you take, after all there are hundreds of professors who wrote such models. But your tribe example brought me to wrote this. It could be the same anywhere, if evolution / socialization went different. |

It's good that all of you still believe that we have a free will.
You don't have have to tell me what dimorphism is^^ I have biology myself. But I think you got me wrong. Never thought that my previous post could be interpreted in that way. Perhaps it's because I don't know anyone who things that way. Seems to be a pretty uncommon thought at least in my generation in germany. As to what I wanted to say. I didn't mean any difference in intellect. Through hormones our brain designs are a bit different. (shit I just can't tell it how I want to. If I read it it sounds sexistic again T_T; difficult to write such texts in other languages) Nah I think I will stop I just can't explain it in english. And I didn't mean genderroles aswell... not 100% is education, perhaps 50-75% Edited by Tetsuki, Aug 28 2010, 03:40 AM.

Right, we seem to have drifted from perceiving gender as a trait, to gender roles and the biology of the sexes. Drifted off in a curious direction. Before I roll back to point, gender roles are a product of socialisation, which is split into stages, and after we're started on this with out parents, we go on into the outside world, and we're shaped by different institutions, like education, social groups, work. At the end of all of this, because we started on the telling of gender by certain things, the point was that it's socialisation that makes us differentiate between men and women. We're pretty much taught to tell the difference, and when someone appears that is out of our taught ways, then all the gender confusion appears. And somehow, this skill somehow gets applied to text. And telling gender by words, well, there is proof that on the whole, women will write differently to men. Once I can remember exactly what the study was, I'll perhaps type it up. I'm tired now, messy sleep hours. Something about how one is more personal and direct, where as one will be more conservative in their wording. I'm not sure if it applies, tbh. |

LOL i love having people guess my gender. It's actually quite amusing to see that people think of me HAHA though I am starting to agree with shiki here. (I'll put in some personal imput) there are characteristics of the male and female mind that make you think one person is one or the other. Although the differentiacion isnt clear in many aspects, the main question i'm bring up here is the equality of men and women... (yeah I'm going a bit overboard) still i beilieve in equality of the genders and that the other gender should not be misjudged for being born the way they were. Though i do have to say that there might be slight differences in the way men and women type and their thought processes, but people should be judged due to circumstances in which they were born. Well, I am beginning to believe that i am spending too much time typing this and i wont have time to reply to the other forum posts!! D: I'll elaborate when i have time... MUST FINISH HOMEWORKKKKK!!! now there are more girls...^^ Hm why I wrote "red or yellow" ? At first I wanted to write "black or white, girl or boy" but then I got the thought it could get misinterpreted as if I was asking if you are black or white and following that it could get interpreted as some kind of rasism. So I stuck to red and yellow. As to why I used it. If you mix those to colors you get orange. There is no other way. They determine each other and can't live without them. Quite the same as humans... perhaps I made that up just now... I don't really remember the reason. |

i like yellow when it's combined with other colors, especially blue and green. but it doesn't look good on me, so i kind of don't like it. |

err... I wasn't talking about colors you wear... I talked about the colors one associates with gender, but, oh well... I wear white or black usually, for practical reasons. White reflects sunlight, so I wear it in summer and black in winter. I don't really have a favorite color, but I think it would probably be one of those two, because you can't really associate them with any other color. |
