THE Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) advised the declaration as danger zone of an area in Poblacion, Mankayan, which is affected by a massive landslide and the relocation of households located near the area. The move is to prevent future accidents that could be brought on by the massive landslide last week along Aurora Street at Poblacion village last week. Governor Nestor Fongwan already instructed the municipal disaster coordinating council to conduct an actual count to determine the number of households and individuals affected by the landslide and the cracks which were noticed. Seven households were initially reported to have suffered the consequences of the slide. To stop further softening of the soil and prevent occurrence of more landslides, the MGB also recommended for drainage systems to be diverted away from the slide area. The school, which was severely affected, was likewise recommended for demolition. Slides in Poblacion, Mankayan have been recorded since 1975. The MGB said the area is prone to mass movements due to several factors, including geological and physical. Militants are blaming mining firm Lepanto for the geological problems occurring in the town, saying the mine operations is the main culprit for the ground instabilities. |
