How To Choose a Presidential Candidate Wisely During times of elections, most citizens are left with a very important decision to make – who to vote for as president. Every few years, people are expected to go to their respective precincts and cast their vote for the next head of state. The reasons for selecting a person to be president may be varied but all reasons are viable as long as they are a result of a logical process. Here’s how you choose a presidential candidate wisely: * Consider the stance of a candidate on national issues that you care about. For instance, most Americans nowadays are very concerned with how the economy is looking. This means having a president that would have the best strategies to combat the economic slowdown could probably be the best option. If your main issue is security and the war in Iraq, perhaps having a candidate with the most extensive policy for military and counter terrorism ventures. * Read up on the past statements of the candidate on social issues. Is the candidate’s position on socialized health care similar to what you believe in? This has been quite an important talking point during the last Presidential elections back in 2008. Other issues that usually get talked about a lot during presidential election years include the fiscal deficit, same sex marriage, military spending, gun control, immigration and other domestic issues that affect the population in general. *Check the track record of the candidates. Has the candidate always championed the causes that he says he is fighting for? Lip service is very convenient as a strategy during election and campaign season so make sure that the candidate can put his money where his mouth is. See if he has worked with organizations and parties that support the causes that he claims to support. *If the candidate has been in Congress or the Senate before being a presidential candidate, try looking at his voting record. This would more or less show you how much political will and consistency he has when voting on key issues. * Look up footage and sound bites of the presidential debates and other interviews wherein the candidates expound on their positions on certain issues. This would help you gauge just how much knowledgeable and critical a leader the candidate can potentially be. * Do not be swayed by negative advertisement. This is something that is done by a lot of candidates around election time so be wary of the veracity of the claims on ads. Most of these claims are eventually disproven long after the results of the elections have been finalized. Voting for a presidential candidate is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. It is every citizen’s duty to make sure that the choice is made through a rational and conscientious process. At the end of the day, it’s all about being well informed and critical. Those are the things that are needed to vote wisely. |
