Jose Mourinho believes the team-spirit he has forged at Chelsea is strong enough to see his side through the injury crisis that threatens to damage their title challenge.

Mourinho could be forgiven if he had given up taking a roll call of his remaining fit players in case another one has joined the growing ranks of walking wounded.

Such a lengthy injury list would have shattered morale at most clubs, but Mourinho's demand that the team's needs come above all else has rubbed off on every player who works for him.

As a result, the Stamford Bridge changing room has plenty of strong personalities who will pull together during this testing period.

Which is just as well because only 12 players were available to train on Wednesday. Crucially, Mourinho will be without John Terry for at least a month, while Didier Drogba faces two weeks on the sidelines.

The loss of those two talismanic stars, along with injuries to Michael Ballack, Paulo Ferreira, Wayne Bridge, Claude Makelele, Salomon Kalou and Andriy Shevchenko has left Mourinho struggling to even name a squad of 16 players for Sunday's Premiership opener against Birmingham.

But the Portuguese coach is confident Chelsea's unified spirit will help them get off to a good start as they try to regain the Premiership crown.

"The players are adapting well," Mourinho told ChelseaTV. "The club are happy with the players. The players are happy with the club.

"They want to stay and I think this is a very happy and friendly group with a lot of quality in football aspects, but also a happy family and I think we can dream of good things because the group is fantastic.

"Everybody is intelligent enough to understand that we play around 60 matches a season and no one plays 60 matches.

"If you are not first-choice at the beginning of the season you know that, step by step, you will get matches."

Despite having so many absences, Mourinho is tempted by the prospect of a 20 million pounds fee for Arjen Robben.

Real Madrid are willing to pay that much for the Dutch winger and Mourinho would willingly trade an injury-plagued player for Sevilla's Daniel Alves, who he is trying to bring to London for a similar price.

If that deal goes through, Mourinho will finally have found a solution to the right-back position that was his side's Achilles heel for long periods last season.

Assuming he can eventually get his first choice team onto the pitch, Mourinho will expect to push Manchester United much harder this season.

Through the second half of last season, the feeling persisted that Sir Alex Ferguson's team had a momentum that Chelsea, distracted by in-fighting between Mourinho and Roman Abramovich, were unequipped to halt.

But with that feud apparently settled, Chelsea will be United's most potent challengers again.

They proved in the Community Shield that even without so many players they could match United and Steve Sidwell, one of Mourinho's close-season signings, is certain there is no lack of desire to dethrone United.

"Other clubs are obviously going to think it is a good time to play Chelsea but what they have got to remember is the players who are going to be playing are going to want to make a mark on the manager's selection for the next game," Sidwell said.

"What I have seen in pre-season is the hunger for success, the hunger to get this title back.

"Chelsea are victims of their own success. We have been successful over the last few years and with that you get a lot of negativity. But we know what we want and what we have got.

If it looks like a duck, floats like a duck, and even quacks like a duck, then it is probably a duck. But if Jose Mourinho says it's a fish, then it's a fucking fish! :bat:

Jose Mourinho expects Chelsea to make a statement to their Premiership rivals as they begin their bid to regain the title.

Mourinho's side go into Sunday's opener against Birmingham at Stamford Bridge with a lengthy injury list, but the Blues manager is refusing to feel sorry for himself and wants his players to follow suit.

John Terry, Michael Ballack and Wayne Bridge are definitely out, while Didier Drogba is a major doubt and Claude Makelele, Petr Cech, Paulo Ferreira and Andriy Shevchenko are carrying knocks.

Losing so many key players before a ball has even been kicked would cripple morale at most clubs.

But such negativity doesn't even enter Mouinho's mind and he believes the situation has presented an opportunity to show Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal that nothing can halt Chelsea this season.

"In the Community Shield we played the first half without a single striker and had two kids and two keepers on the bench," Mourinho said.

"We didn't cry. We faced the situation and tried to organise the team the best we can and we played very well. So the natural tendency of things is to improve the situation.

"We have players out but that's football. It's better now than in the middle of the season or the end of the season when everything is crucial.

"The situation is better now than it was last weekend. I have two or three more players than I had for the previous weekend, the situation is better and the tendency is to improve."

Mourinho finds himself in the unusual position of being dwarfed by United and Liverpool's spending in the transfer market. The London club's 13 million pounds purchase of Lyon winger Florent Malouda was their only cash deal this close season, while their rivals splashed out more than 40 million pounds each.

Even Fulham and Portsmouth spent more than Chelsea, but Mourinho is not concerned.

"I don't like to speak about money," he said. "I wasn't speaking when Chelsea were one of the top spenders in the transfer list.

"They spent what they spent and if they did it that's because they have the money. That's not my problem."

Mourinho is confident Frank Lampard's decision to postpone contract talks until the end of the season will not be a problem, but he did hint that Arjen Robben could be on his way to Real Madrid.

The Spanish club have made several offers for the winger and will get their man if they match Chelsea's 25 million pounds asking price.

"Until the 31 August everything is possible in terms of people to come and people to go," Mourinho said. "I think the situation has a lot of speculation behind it but of course also some truth. And we have to wait a bit more to see."

Steve Bruce has given newly promoted Birmingham an injection of young blood by signing several promising talents including Fabrice Muamba, Liam Ridgewell and Daniel De Ridder.

City winger Gary McSheffrey believes the presence of so many players hungry to make their mark on the Premiership will give them a fighting chance of staying up.

"The manager made it clear when Birmingham went down two seasons ago that there were too many older players who were here for a pay day," he said.

"He then looked to sign a different player, a hungrier type of player and it paid off with us getting promotion.

"He has made good signings and a similar type of signings to before, in the sense that they are people who will work for the shirt.

"There is a good bit of banter about the squad, a good team spirit."

Jose Mourinho paid tribute to Birmingham City after Chelsea's 3-2 win over the Premiership new boys at Stamford Bridge.

Steve Bruce's side took a shock lead when Mikael Forssel scored against his former club.

Goals from debutants Claudio Pizarro and Florent Malouda gave the Blues the lead before new boy Olivier Kapo made it 2-2 with a sensational strike.

Michael Essien struck at the start of the second-half to give Chelsea victory which sees them set a new record of 64 matches unbeaten at home.

Mourinho admitted his side were outplayed by the visitors.

"I think it was a good game, not just because Chelsea played well but because Birmingham did as well," Mourinho said.

"Teams who have come up from the Championship have a champion mentality.

"We had so many chances to kill the game, it would have been more enjoyable for me to see a 4-2 or a 5-3 than a 3-2.

"It was a good game to celebrate the home record, a game with goals and enthusiasm, and better than a 0-0 where we still have the record but it's not a good game."

The result sees the FA Cup holders overtake Liverpool's home record set from February 1978 to January 1981.

Abramovich left his seat in the stand after Agbonlahor wrapped up the points in the 88th minute at Villa

But Mourinho insisted: "I think the owner leaves the stadium when he wants to leave. I went to see England-Germany the other day and I left early because I wanted to beat the traffic."

Mourinho is predicting the Premier League title race will be more open this season after his side's 18-match unbeaten run came to an end.

It was their first League defeat since going down 2-0 at Liverpool in January. But Mourinho feels the money spent this summer by Villa and other sides outside of the top four will mean more surprise results in the next nine months.

He said: "It will become more normal for the big teams to lose matches and points.

"The other teams have spent lots of money and brought players in to bolster their teams. It will be more difficult to play against these teams because they are better. The league is open but we are only five matches into the season."

Frank Lampard missed yesterday's game with a torn thigh muscle but he is receiving treatment in an oxygen chamber to try to be fit for England's match against Russia, a week on Wednesday.

Didier Drogba, who had to be carried off near the end of the game, will have tests to see the extent of his second knee injury this season.

Having a coffee with my mate over there in Sloan Squ seems to have worked although i still reckon my gf did make a big impact on him and i was well pleased with his nod.. :lmao:

I have to give a hand to Jose here, cause i have some respect for him, he never once claimed rovers player a dirty game, he said we played a good game, he (and i admit this) stated we matched them until the last 20 mins which is true, we werent the better team but we played good football, he said all this and didnt give excuses as to why in general they didnt break us down, only complaint he made was about offside decision which i an understand but all respect he didnt follow the usual media sheep thing such as weneger and erikson but said the truth, my hat off to him.

What some poeple will do for an expresso...
