England assistant manager Terry Venables believes Frank Lampard proved the doubters wrong against Germany on Wednesday night. Lampard scored the opening goal with a fine strike early on at Wembley and, although Germany came back to win 2-1, Venables was delighted with the midfielder's contribution. "For me, Frank was outstanding in our game against Germany the other night - especially when you think about all the flak he gets," said Venables in The Sun. "The great thing about Frank is that, no matter how bad the criticism gets, he never hides. He always wants the ball and feels the need to get involved. "I have a lot of respect for that attitude. "In football, it is often about how you react when you are getting a hard time and there can be few better examples than Frank. "I thought he was not only the best player in our team at Wembley, he was the best player on the pitch." Venables also feels the criticism of the England team was unfair. "There was the usual hysteria about our performance. If we do well in a friendly, it's because the other team isn't trying and, if you lose, it's a disaster. "I think many fans felt we deserved at least a draw out of it but, when the scoreline shows you lost, inevitably you get hammered." |
