French Under-21 international Diarra was a guest in the directors' box during Tuesday's Carling Cup victory over Leeds. The midfielder should be available for a reasonable fee having not appeared in Chelsea's squad since the Community Shield clash with Manchester United on August 5. Redknapp appears to be having a frustrating time in his bid to add to the squad before the Friday transfer deadline. Former Fratton Park hero Yakubu has completed an £11million move from Middlesbrough to Everton, Nicolas Anelka has signed a new contract with Bolton and Jermain Defoe is hesitating over the opportunity to leave Tottenham for anything but a top-four Premier League club. Portsmouth will not confirm a reported bid for Eidur Gudjohnsen at Barcelona but are believed to have made an inquiry about the former Chelsea and Bolton star. The Icelander, known to be a friend of Redknapp's son Jamie, has emerged as a surprise target and would be available for around £7million but has apparently told his Spanish employers he wants to stay and fight for his place. David Nugent, who arrived at Pompey from Preston only last month, has given the same message to Redknapp who was prepared to sell him to Derby to help finance an alternative striker. Nugent told Sky Sports: "I'm happy at Portsmouth. I know it will be difficult for me to earn a place in the team but I am ready to stay and fight for it." |
