Pennant: I don’t mind being left

Hang em first. Question em later.
Jermaine Pennant insists he'll play wherever Rafa Benitez wants after being deployed on the left for much of Saturday's demolition of Derby.
Both Pennant and Ryan Babel looked extremely dangerous after swapping flanks in the early stages of the 6-0 win.

"I don't mind playing anywhere - left or right. When I'm on the left I get a little bit of joy cutting in on my right foot," said the 24-year-old winger.

"The gaffer sees the game better sitting on the bench and he decides what's best for the team."

Pennant added: "Would I play left-wing for England? Definitely. You could put me right-back if you wanted to.

"It's nice to hear the manager say I should be in the England squad and if I continue to do what I'm doing, and get the press behind me, who knows."

An interesting choice of words from JP there.

Very astute of him and I noticed that a number of papers were commenting on how he had made a mockery of mcclaren's decision to exclude him with his performance agaisnt derby. A few more of those against better defenders and the press may really start questioning his absence from an england shirt (for goddam bentley)

Yes but playing devil's advocate here isn't allowing the press to pick the England side what got Sven unstuck? The press hated the selection tactics he employed during friendlies but they seemed to get results. Everything went t!ts up though when the likes of Becks and Owen became undroppable and Lampared and Gerrard were fused into midfield. He got so paranoid about being slaughtered by the media that the squad became parylised. In trying to please everyone he ended up pleasing no-one.

It sounds a silly point of principle but I want Pennant to be picked out of recognition, not because the manager has been brow beaten into it by the press. Ideally I'd much rather wait until McClown's arse is out the door before Pennant pulls on the whites.

I think McLaren does pick who the media raves about.

Gerrard, Lamps, Owen, Rio, Terry, Becks - he picks the best 'players' (or the most hyped players) then slots other players (often out of position) around them. And it doesn't work, it needs to pick a team rather than individuals.

"PENNANT: I'VE NEVER PLAYED BETTER
Paul Eaton 10 September 2007

Jermaine Pennant has reflected on his impressive start to the new league season and admitted: "I'm in the best form of my life."
The Liverpool winger has been one of the stars of the season so far as the Reds have climbed to the top of the Barclays Premier League and secured their place in the group stages of the Champions League.

Pennant's trickery on either flank has been a major asset for Rafa Benitez so far this term and the former Birmingham man insists he's enjoying his football more than ever.

"I probably am playing the best football of my career at the moment," he said.

"The team are playing well, we're scoring goals, winning games and I think we're all enjoying our football.

"I think my attacking play has been good but I'm also working hard all the time on the defensive side of my game and that's getting better all the time.

"I finished last season well and my aim over the summer was to make sure I started this campaign in the same way. To play well in a Champions League final was a massive boost to my confidence and that has definitely helped me perform to a higher standard more regularly this year.

"I still have work to do though. Although I'm happy with my form at the moment I know there is more to come. For a start, I could score more goals. That's a part of my game which I'm definitely capable of improving on and I'll be looking to get on the scoresheet more often as the season goes on."

Pennant also reiterated his disappointment at missing out on the latest England squad, even though coach Steve McClaren has confirmed he was close to making the list this time around.

But, when it comes to a matter of club versus country, there's only one winner.

"Of course I want to play for England," he said. "It's everyone's dream to play for their country and I'm no different.

"I know the manager said I was close to being included, but obviously I wasn't close enough.

"All I can do is keep working hard for Liverpool and see what happens. Liverpool is my priority. If it came down to a choice of winning the league with Liverpool or playing for England then there's only one winner there. It would be Liverpool every time.

"It's so long since we won the league and I'd love to be a part of the first team to do it for many years."

That's why JP's a success at Liverpool and Bellamy's now at West Ham.

And the moment I say that I find this....

"Liverpool's Pennant involved in pizza bust-up
tribalfooball.com - September 10, 2007

Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant was caught up an alleged row at a takeaway pizza shop.

The Sun says Pennant got so hammered in a nightclub he could barely stand up.

Liverpool winger Pennant, 24, was then involved in a bust-up at a pizza takeaway - and ended up falling over.

Witnesses said he tried to ease the situation by waving his hands and slurring "calm down, calm down" before hitting the ground. One of his pals, also believed to be a footballer, was arrested for a public order offence.

The pair had been drinking in a trendy bar in Bournemouth, Dorset, before apparently going to the takeaway."

Christ on a bike I hope that's just The S*n's bulls**t.

IF it's true then someone needs to take JP aside and remind him that he's doing so well for us at the moment, not just in the way he's playing but in the way he's won the doubter's over, that this is just hitting a self-destruct button.
Just seems to me that whenever he goes out to blow of a little steam he ends up splashed all across the back pages the next day.

the thing is, he's got a bit of spare time on his hands, like everyone else, he's only human and is allowed to go out for a few drinks, just like you and i, nowt wrong with that, the way i see it is pennants mate has got into an argument, jp has stepped in to stop it from escalating.

Don't see anything wrong with that

Think it's the sun making a story out of nothing. I'm sure if Pennant was as hammered as they're trying to make out he would have been arrested with his mate for his own safety. Interesting how they don't name his footballing mate.

It's ironic. A generation ago I imagine players got sloshed and needed carrying home all the time. These days it's treated like a capital crime.

It's just the Scum bigging something up imo. Once a player picks up a rep, which Pennant unfortunately has, the vultures follow every move they make for scandal.
