With the weight of the world off his shoulders, Shaun Wright-Phillips was all smiles as he shared a joke with his Chelsea and England team-mate Ashley Cole yesterday.

Cole playfully tugged at his shirt as the winger was about to whip in another cross for Peter Crouch during training at London Colney, but there was no holding him back. Not for Chelsea and certainly not for England.
By Jose Mourinho's own admission, Wright-Phillips has been Chelsea's best player so far this season. After a stirring start to the campaign for his club side, Wright-Phillips deserves his place in the England squad preparing for Saturday's clash with Israel.

KTBFFH!

Totally agree that SWP should be in the starting line up for Israel - he has been the player for us so far this season that he always appeared he could be - we need to see whether he can do the same for England - which I think he definitely can -

Shaun Wright-Phillips intends to continue working hard with a smile on his face as the Chelsea winger looks to cement a permanent place in the England side.

The 25-year-old produced a superb display down the right flank against Israel at Wembley on Saturday, setting England on their way to a 3-0 victory with the opening goal.

It capped an impressive start to the season for the former Manchester City man, whose career had stalled since a big money move to Stamford Bridge during the summer of 2005.

Wright-Phillips, though, maintains he never questioned his own ability or what at one time looked an uncertain future, following the unequivocal support of friends and family - including his step-father, former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright.

"I am not really a negative thinker - I always try to think positive," Wright-Phillips said.

"The main thing is that everybody, my family and friends, my dad, they all had the belief in me.

"That was the key factor.

"They kept me smiling and for me that is the main thing, as long as you are happy and you have confidence in yourself, then life goes on."

Following his impressive recent form, there have been suggestions Wright-Phillips should be a permanent fixture on the right side of England's midfield - ahead of former skipper David Beckham, who is currently out with a knee problem as he embarks on a new career with Los Angeles Galaxy in America.

SWP credits Cole with form
by Joseph Caron Dawe, 11 September 2007

Shaun Wright-Phillips has cited Chelsea and England team-mate Joe Cole as the inspiration behind his outstanding return to form.

The diminutive winger has worked tirelessly, in much in the same way Cole did, to fight his way back to prominence after being overlooked at both club and country level.

The 25-year-old former Manchester City player suffered from a lack of first-team opportunities after his move to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2005, and then lost his place in the national team after David Beckham was recalled.

However, he and Cole are now operating on both wings for England and Wright-Phillips has been a standout performer for Chelsea so far this season.

"Joe Cole is an idol for everybody and I am a believer that you can learn off every player you work with,” he said. “To have someone who has been through it is a plus.

"Me and Coley are really good friends and chat about all sorts of things.

“The most important thing is that we enjoy each other's company and there is a tight bond there."

Wright-Phillips says he has always had faith in his own ability to perform for whoever he plays and would never let his time spent on the bench affect his morale.

“I have never worried about that,” he added. “For me I am a great believer that things happen for a reason.

“Obviously while people have said I have not been playing I have been learning and have had my head down and worked hard."

Basically that's to stop him having to deal with endless "Why did Jose leave" questions.
