League Two
atletico are searching for a new goalkeeper with leo franco failing to perform on a consistent basis and christian abbiati only being on loan until the end of the season. the capital club are believed to have sounded out if the keeper would be interested in a move back to spain.

however, Liverpool are unlikely to entertain any move for reina who is firmly established as a number one at anfield.

Reina has previously expressed his happinessat anfield and he signed a new deal earlier in the summer to keep him at the club until 2012.

find yourself a different target lads, reina is doubtful to be going anywhere. for the first time in quite a while i'm happy with our keeper situation, and i don't see the 'poolgetting rid of him... :nerner:

Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina has signed a new contract that keeps him at the club until 2012.

The 25-year-old follows Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, who signed new deals earlier in the week.

"It was always my wish to sign a new deal because this is a good club which is looking forward to a very ambitious and attractive project," said Reina.

Boss Rafa Benitez said: "Pepe's record at Liverpool is very good. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world."

Spain international Reina joined Liverpool from Primera Liga side Villarreal for £6m in July 2005.

And Benitez added: "We knew we needed to talk with a number of our players and Pepe was one of them.

Our fans deserve the league title and that's what we'll be looking for

"He has had two good years with us and, because of his age, we knew we had to sort out a long contract.

"Pepe's record at Liverpool is very good. He's had a lot of clean sheets and you can see the confidence the defenders have in him.

"When he plays, the defenders look very comfortable and that is so important."

Reina, who is the established first choice at Anfield, has an excellent record of saving penalties.

He made several crucial penalty saves as Liverpool beat West Ham to win the 2006 FA Cup and as the Reds beat Chelsea in a shoot out in their Champions League semi-final.

And the keeper is now looking for the club to mount a serious Premiership title challenge next season.

"I spoke with Rafa and his thoughts for the future really excited me," added Reina.

"He has ambitions for the team which I want to be part of and I'm sure the other players feel the same.

"The idea now for all of us is to keep winning matches and to challenge for titles. That's what we'll be looking for from the start of next season.

"Our fans deserve the league title and that's what we'll be looking for. Seventeen years without winning it is far too long for this club and that's why our biggest target next year has to be the Premiership."

"Rafa denies keeper exit talk
by Tom Adams, 11 September 2007

Rafa Benitez has dismissed reports which claimed Atletico Madrid were lining up a move for Liverpool keeper Jose Reina.

Madrid daily AS reported that Atleti were keen to capture Reina and had been planning a strong assault on the former Barcelona man at the end of the season.

However, Benitez has investigated the source of the story and does not believe the report has any credibility given Reina signed a new deal at Anfield only this summer.

“I spoke to some people about this and, unfortunately, I think the journalist who wrote the story is very inexperienced,” Benitez told the Liverpool Post.

“Maybe before Pepe signed a new contract a lot of clubs wanted to talk to him, but that was many weeks ago.

“He is very happy at Liverpool and I don’t believe at the start of the season, with Pepe and the team playing really well, is the time to start talking about what will happen at the end of this season.

“The transfer window is closed and Pepe is really happy here so a story like this is not true.”

Mister B-man
The man is key to our winning the title - why would he go join a club that can't even qualify for the CL when they have a player like Torres in the side?

Talk about shoddy journalism - it's even more ridiculous than the Crouch to Newcastle garbage that does its bi-annual rounds every transfer window.
