"Iceland 1 Spain 1 Andres Iniesta was again his side's hero as 10-man Spain salvaged a late draw against Iceland in a rain-drenched Group F encounter in Reykjavik. Iniesta, who scored an 80th-minute winner against Iceland in Mallorca in March, netted four minutes from time on Saturday as Spain overcame the early dismissal of midfielder Xabi Alonso to deny Iceland what would have been only their second group win. Before kick-off there was a minute's tribute to Antonio Puerta, the Sevilla wing-back who died last week at the age of 22 after suffering a cardiac arrest during a league game against Getafe. The visiting Spanish, who also wore black armbands during the game in memory of their former team-mate, came into the encounter on the back of a six-match winning streak and they were quickly on the attack. There were less than four minutes on the clock when David Villa had the first effort of the match, the Spain striker seeing his low free-kick superbly tipped around the post by Iceland goalkeeper Arni Arason. Spain suffered a major blow in the 19th minute though when Alonso was shown a straight red card following a challenge on Arnar Vidarsson. Iceland should have added salt to Spanish wounds immediately after Alonso's dismissal but Joey Gudjonsson stabbed his shot wide from seven yards out with only Iker Casillas to beat. Despite having a man less, Spain twice tested Arason through Sergio Ramos and Fernando Torres, before Iceland claimed the lead five minutes before the break through Emil Hallfredsson. Gudjonsson whipped in a deep cross from the right byline and Hallfredsson sent a diving header back across Casillas and into the bottom corner of the net, giving the hosts a lead they kept until the 86th minute. Spain dominated possession in the second half, but created few clear-cut chances against a well-organised and hard-working Icelandic defence, while at the other end Casillas did well to deny Gunnar Thorvaldsson doubling the home side's advantage midway through the period. Luis Aragones' men were camped in the Iceland half for the closing stages and, although it looked as though it was not going to come, they finally got they goal they were desperately searching for through substitute Iniesta. Villa flicked the ball forward and Luis Garcia's lay-off on the edge of the home area was collected by the charging Iniesta, and the Barcelona man again broke Icelandic hearts as he clinically slid the ball past Arason from 15 yards out." |

Not so bad, means when International week comes round next we won't have to worry that Xabi will come back injured. I was more interested by the fact Emil Hallfredsson scored for Iceland. On football manager he carries my Norway team to respectable performances, what a disappointment that he's now registered for Iceland |

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image we could have won but i'm not gonna complain about a draw against spain over the past 10 years we havent lost to any of the "giants" at home. France (1-1), Germany (0-0), Italy (2-0 win, that was a friendly though), Spain (0-0 friendly, and 1-1), and maybe not a giant but we also beat the czech republic 3-1 in that period not bad for a country that has a smaller population than Coventry  |
