Lets hope they are playing up to scratch for that one. if it helps. Rosenborg lost 2-1 at IK Start at the weekend and is fifth in the Norwegian league, 10 points behind leader Brann Bergen after 19 matches. |

Chelsea face Norwegian side Rosenborg in their Group B opener at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night with the English side favourites to make short work of their opponents. But injuries to Ivorian striker Didier Drogba and England midfielder Frank Lampard will again rob the Blues of an attacking edge that saw the pair contribute more than 50 goals last season. wonder when they will be back |

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that neither Frank Lampard nor Didier Drogba will be available for Tuesday’s game against Rosenborg and, more pressingly, the Chelsea boss is unsure whether either player will recover in time for the trip to Manchester United on Sunday. Both players missed their country’s exploits in the international break and were tellingly absent when Chelsea only managed to gain a point in a 0-0 home draw with Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. Ivory Coast star Drogba is suffering with a knee problem and Lampard has sustained a thigh injury, meaning both players will be absent when Chelsea open their Champions league Group B campaign with a home game against Rosenborg on Tuesday. With the game against Sir Alex Ferguson’s champions also looming large, Mourinho will have his fingers crossed that the two crucial performers will be able to shrug off their respective fitness problems before Sunday. “No Drogba no Lampard, I don’t know [whether they will be back to face United on Sunday],” Mourinho told a press conference. Chelsea are also without Ricardo Carvalho (thigh), Michael Ballack and Wayne Bridge (both ankle) at present, and doubts surround the fitness of striker Claudio Pizarro due to a calf strain. Mourinho has admitted the growing injury list is a concern as it has afflicted the spine of his side, including some key goalscorers. “For me the problem is not to have three or four players, the real problem is which three or four are injured and that is a problem,” Mourinho added. “Drogba, Lampard, Ballack and Carvalho, you are speaking about 40 percent of the team, the spine of the team – one defender, two central midfielders and one striker. “After that you go for Pizarro, he is the second target man so should be the direct replacement for Didier, and he is out too, that is five. “We go to Wayne Bridge and Ashley Cole is the only left back playing every game, every minute, at Chelsea and the national team. “So the problem is not four, five or six injuries, the problem is which players they are and the importance of the players for the team. “For example at this moment when you speak about Drogba and Lampard, I don’t have the statistics with me but maybe you are talking about 50 percent of the team’s goals, so they are important injuries for us, but that is the reality. “I am speaking about it because you asked me, not because I want to cry on it. I want to work with the players that are available, try to play the best and try to get a result.” |

key battles MICHAEL ESSIEN v MAREK SAPARA After taking a year to find his feet in English football, Essien was widely regarded as Chelsea's best midfielder last season as they won the domestic cup double and reached the Champions League semi-finals. He also scored some vital goals and a few more this season could see him become the most complete player in the country. Sapara is the most influential player in the Rosenborg team and shutting him down will be the key to Chelsea avoiding a shock result at Stamford Bridge. The Slovak has drawn comparisons with David Beckham for his long-range passing and dead-ball accuracy, meaning Essien and co will really need to be on their mettle at set-pieces. SALOMON KALOU v MIIKA KOPPINEN Kalou was stuck firmly in the shadow of the awesome Didier Drogba in his debut season, managing only nine goals. He was unlucky not to break his duck this term when he had a goal wrong chalked off against Blackburn on Saturday. Nevertheless, with Drogba struggling with an injury, the 22-year-old must now start producing and he will not get a better opportunity for target practise than against the Group B minnows. Rosenborg's defence will be in for a busy time against Chelsea's superstars, meaning Koppinen will need to be at his very best if the Norwegians are to stand a chance of avoiding defeat. The Finn is also a threat at the other end of the pitch, having scored in the third qualifying round against Tampere. JOHN TERRY v STEFFEN IVERSEN Terry is the rock on which Jose Mourinho's Chelsea are built and as captain he leads by both word and deed. One of English football's best headers of the ball, he will need to be at his best in that area to stifle the aerial threat posed by Iversen. Iversen spent eight years in English football with Tottenham and Wolves and has come up against Terry before. However, he will not have fond memories of his most recent encounter with the England captain, who helped Chelsea inflict a 5-0 defeat on Wolves at Molineux. He will be keen the redress the balance. |

Drogba's knee injury continues to cause him pain, while Lampard has a thigh injury, with Peruvian Claudio Pizarro also missing out due to a calf problem. Rosenborg, who are only lying fifth this season, will be without key midfielder Roar Strand. Former Tottenham striker Steffen Iversen and ex-Liverpool defender Bjorn Tore Kvarme are included in the Norwegian champions' squad. Rosenborg have faced English clubs in the Champions League twice before and lost both away matches; in 1995-96 they succumbed 4-1 at Blackburn Rovers and in 2004-05 they went down 5-1 at Arsenal. In the Champions League, Chelsea have reached the semi-final three times in 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2006-07. This year marks the 11th Champions League participation for Rosenborg. Their best European result was reaching the CL quarter-finals in 1996-97 when they were eliminated by losing finalists Juventus. Current European form Chelsea are unbeaten in their last six Champions League home matches. Their last home defeat came on 22 February 2006 against FC Barcelona. Rosenborg qualified for the main tournament by eliminating FK Astana (10-2 on aggregate) and Tampere United (5-0 on aggregate). So, why are we so goal shy...bad luck ? It cant really be that can It ? well whatever it is, it needs sorting. |
