"Is Liverpool’s Voronin the Premier League bargain of the century? Tue, Sep 18, 07 12:57Joe Baker Andriy Voronin: Dazzler who cost nothing (gettyimages.com)Ukrainian who cost nothing has grabbed his big chance with both hands and is giving Kuyt, Crouch and £26.5m Torres a run for their money at Anfield. gossip rumour news arsenal, chelsea, spurs, west ham, manchester city, manchester united, everton, newcastle, aston villa ‘Now Rafa Benitez has the type of ‘problem’ that any manager would love to have, i.e. too many good players to pick from.’ It took a while but Liverpool finally got their man and months after the deal was originally sealed it appears that it was well worth the wait. Andriy Voronin, 28, made a name for himself during more than a decade in the Bundesliga with Borussia Mönchengladbach (that name must still send shivers down Reds fans’ spines), Mainz, Köln and Bayer Leverkusen, and the long-haired striker wisely let his contract count down before his dream move to Anfield. It took only minutes in a Liverpool jersey to see that Voronin is a class act, the kind of player that makes things happen. Originally, I thought he would be more of a squad player, the type who helps in a 50+ game season and certainly behind the likes of Dirk Kuyt, Peter Crouch and Fernando Torres. However, this no longer seems the case and now Rafa Benitez has the type of ‘problem’ that any manager would love to have, i.e. too many good players to pick from. What ‘The Crow’ has above the others in the striking queue is that he is more adaptable. He can play in a number of positions and seems to have the knack of being in the right place at the right time. Another advantage is that he is unlikely to be fazed by being in and out of the team as Benitez chops and changes. Having waited so long for this shot at such a huge club, he will not disrupt things with demands to be in the first team. Come May, when the dust settles on another season, there will be many signings who are deemed to have made all the difference. The Ukrainian No.10 may be just such a player – his goal scoring and contribution to the team is already abundantly clear and, as he came to Merseyside for nothing, there can be few better bargains in the Premier League. Many fans outside of Anfield have been all to quick to jump on the bandwagon, predicting that £26.5million man Torres is a waste of money, but surely it is undeniable that Rafa has also picked up one of the bargains of the century. Perhaps what Voronin possesses above all else is the hunger of a man who has waited patiently for his chance – and he has the ability and skill to make the most of it." |

Very good article that. "thumb" Interesting to speculate: if Crouch really is desperate for a move in January because he's so low in the pecking order, I wonder if we can trade him for Newcastle's Martins? The guy ain't a BAD player after all, and if we just need someone to make the numbers up... On the other hand knowing Crouch he'd probably put a hat trick past us next game. |
