Looks like it was just wishful thinking.

Playing equally badly and now down to 10 men!

Pennant's sending off just sums it all up TBH!

1-1 FT.

Pretty poor performance but worked hard when down to 10 men. Thats our hardest fixture in the group stages out of the way too so I'll take 1-1.

MotM: Kuyt. He worked incredibly hard, as usual, and never stopped even when moved to the wing he stuck to his job. Good header for his goal too.

TBH dunno why I'm doing this, I know I'm just talking to myself!!

Benitez should have took Pennant off, I think everybody could see he was going to get sent off. He just kept making stupid challenges and the Porto players began to sense they could get him sent off. Everyone seemed to have a very poor game in a red shirt. Our back four was all over the place and Gerrard wasn't himself either. Torres had no supply. Two positives are that we got a point we didn't deserve and that fabio Aurellio is back just as Arbeloa is beginning to lose form.

It could be worse though we could have just drawn to Rosenborg at home

Aurelio did quite well in the time he was on I thought, good to see him back.

I didn't think Arbeloa did any worse than the rest, solid but caught out on a couple of occasions.

Here's my ratings:

Reina - 6
Finnan - 5
Arbeloa - 6
Carragher - 7
Hyypia - 6
Pennant - 4
Gerrard - 5
Mascherano - 5
Babel - 5.5
Kuyt - 7.5
Torres - 5

Subs:
Voronin - 6
Aurelio - 6

Worse than Saturday but we got away with it again. We'll miss Pennant, and he'll get a right roasting in the dressing room, but Porto will be well pissed with this result.

That's probably our hardest fixture in the CL group stage this season and I am happy with the draw. Best thing was we scored again, so hopefully we're not looking at a loss of supply up front.

The most worrying thing about this game for me was the penalty. 3 in 5 league games and now a fourth in the CL. Pennant's s/o aside we have a very good disciplinary record so it's difficult to fathom why we're getting hit like this.

On the penalties I think its football giving us some of that karma. We haven't had many given against us but just now it seems we can't get away with nothing. On Saturday that could have gone either way most weeks the ref would have waved it away. The villa one was a case of getting too comfortable and then been caught out and the one against Chelsea, well we've had that debate time to move on. Today was Hyppia showing his age something that would have made Rafa look not so strategic if Hyppia hadn't then gone on to be our best attacking threat.

But for the penalties though we STILL haven't conceded from open play. Another positive to take from the game. My ratings for the game are

Reina - 6
Finnan - 5
Arbeloa - 5
Carragher - 6
Hyypia - 7
Pennant - 5
Gerrard - 5
Mascherano - 6
Babel - 6
Kuyt - 7
Torres - 5

One final thing does anybody our flat performances recently are because of Pako being on gardening leave. I mean you don't realise how much the coaching staff really contribute to a teams success until they're gone

i was thinking that earlier. i dont'know who is doing his jobs now, but not hiring someone else does seem (to me) to be putting extra pressure on people....

What annoys me most about this perfomance, is that if we played anywhere near the level we know we're capable of, we would have beaten Porto quite easily.

Also, Quaresma? I don't see what the big deal is.

Quaresma

He's a pretty footballer in the way he's very good at dribbling and throwing himself to the ground. But whats the point of that if you don't provide an end product. If he had that final ball in him we'd have been fucked today cos he had the beating of Arbeloa.

Ah well, looks like we've played our get out of jail free card for the group stages :chin:

That was bloody woeful. Only really Kuyt who showed anything for us up front.

After the lacklustre performance last saturday, I'm glad we've only Brum at weekend - we should be able to get back on track.

Hang em first. Question em later.
Pennant aside you have to say the whole team played poor. Though Kuyt's work rate did make him stand out as a better player. Pennant, it was clear as soon as he got the first yellow card he was going to get sent off. You could actually see Rafa say to him on the side 'Stay on your feet.'
I feel Torres got a lot of harsh stick from Townsend and Pleat. Yes he didn't do much but the ball wasn't out of our half much for him to do anything with it. The passing wasn't up to scratch from the start and long ball syndrome sank in early on. What's Torres supposed to do with that?

I think Porto outplayed us at our main game really. Passing and hustling when we haven't got the ball. We're just lucky the final ball wasn't there.

and there was me thinking a draw away from home against the 2nd seeds in our group was a good result

oh well i suppose we must be in crisis now......

and no english team has beaten porto in portugal so it was hardly gonna be a walk in the park as many seem to expect

That was probably the hardest game of your group so a 1-1 draw is an excellent result.
If you win your home games now you'll be through to the knock outs as you only need ten points to qualify
