hiddink has got to be one of the favourites

maybe he'd stay on with russia until the end of qualifying though, and the euros if they qualify

obviously i'm just guessing

Seems unlikely they would let Jose go like this without a replacement at least tentatively pencilled in. Adds more weight to the talk last season that the only reason Jose wasn't sacked last season was because they couldn't get anyone else in, but now there are at least a couple of names who could be in the frame.

Gotta admit I'm stunned by this.
I know he wasn't everyone's cup of tea but he was good for the PL.
And the timing of it's an odd one.
I would've thought that they would've waited until after sunday.
I you would've wanted anyone at the helm for that game surley it would've been him?

Grant set to take over at Chelsea

Chelsea are set to name Avram Grant as their new manager replacing former boss Jose Mourinho, BBC Sport understands.

The Israeli, who was the director of football, will now take charge with Steve Clarke as his assistant.

Grant is expected to be named at Stamford Bridge later today, BBC Sport's Garry Richardson has revealed.

The 51-year-old is a close friend of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and his summer arrival at the club came after opposition from Mourinho.

Once appointed, Mourinho told Grant not to interfere with team affairs but the Israeli held a strong position with a post on the board.

Grant previously held the position of technical director at Portsmouth before going to Chelsea.

And he guided Israel to the brink of World Cup qualification in 2006, having also coached Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Maccabi Haifa.

Former Chelsea player and BBC pundit Gavin Peacock said the appointment was a surprise and Grant would need to work hard to maintain team morale.

"If you're bringing in someone like (Russia manager) Guus Hiddink, then you're bringing in someone of great repute, as for Grant, I don't know.

"I think the heart of the team will be affected by (Mourinho's departure). It will be very difficult to get that team spirit that Mourinho managed to manufacture very quickly at Chelsea."

Avi Cohen, the chairman of the Israeli Football Association and friend of Grant said that the reaction in Israel was one of shock also.

"Avram Grant is very successful in Israel. He won the championship with several teams and he knows football," he said.

"Even so it is a shock that he was chosen. (Previously) he said that he had a very good position at Chelsea. With Abramovich, he is a very good friend and Abramovich believed in him.

"I'm not sure that he won't be successful more than anyone else. If he has the ability he can be successful."

The curse of the 'Director' of football strikes again methinks.

well rich men are used to getting their own way...

He may well of lined up a new manager, but more likely , with the timing, that he lost the plot .

Its not as if Jose has been bad for chelsea is it.

I think its an almighty shock for the players, must be very unnerving to say the least.

The timing of it is just odd.
It's been no secret that their relationship's been on the slide for awhile now but with such a big game coming up you'd have thought that if he wanted rid of he'd have waited and seen if you got a bad result there.
That's if he was pushed and didn't jump.
It might've been a case of he was told he only had a certain ammount of games to turn it around and went "F**k it" (which wouldn't be a surprize if that was the situation).
But taking into account that you're without 2 key players in Lampard and Drogba it's not as if you're in The Spuds position.
Guess we'll have to wait until both Chelsea and Jose release statements and figure out the truth between them.

Think Sir Rog came up with an interesting point.
Jol MUST be feeling a little more worried about his job right now.
Would Jose move to The Spuds just to spite Roman?

Chelsea are set to name Avram Grant as their new manager replacing former boss Jose Mourinho, BBC Sport understands.

The appointment has been met with general surprise and former Chelsea player Pat Nevin thinks it will only be a short-term option.

"It's an absolute certainty to be a short-term measure because they can't get the man they want," he told BBC 5Live.

"And the man I'm sure they want is (Russia manager) Guus Hiddink. He's not going to be available until Russia are out of the competition at the Euros in 2008.

"If Avram Grant takes over the job in the mean time, and the Chelsea fans know that he was brought in and upset Jose, Avram Grant is going to be as welcome as Camilla at Diana's memorial.

"This guy is not well-loved at Chelsea. He is not going to last."

Another former Chelsea player Gavin Peacock agreed with Nevin and said Grant would need to work hard to maintain team morale.

"If you're bringing in someone like Guus Hiddink, then you're bringing in someone of great repute, as for Grant, I don't know," he told BBC 5Live.
