Anderson: I'm no Kleberson by Tom Adams, 07 November 2007 After a promising start to his Manchester United career, Anderson has stated he is ready to break the curse of the South American and succeed at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson’s acquisitions from the continent have been far from successful in recent years, with Kleberson, Diego Forlan and Juan Sebastian Veron all failing to adapt to English football during their inauspicious spells in The Premier League. Whilst Gabriel Heinze looked at home in the red of United, he then made himself a pariah to the Old Trafford support by attempting to orchestrate a move to Liverpool, before then settling on Real Madrid in August. Anderson – prised from Porto over the summer after impressing in Portugal – is ready to buck the trend though and feels that both himself and Argentina international Carlos Tevez have a bright future ahead of them at United. “I know the stories about the problems of the South Americans at Manchester United, but I believe that this season Carlos Tevez and I will break those,” said Anderson in the Daily Mail. “A Brazilian should be able to triumph in any club in the world, including this one, so I won’t make any excuses. “I just want the chance to show my quality. I am Anderson, not Veron or Kleberson – this is the difference. Perhaps I have arrived with more ambition than those two did. “I am happy with the way my stay in England has gone so far. The advice I have had from the manager has just been to work hard and wait for my chance.” Anderson produced a distinctly un-Brazilian display in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal last weekend as he took on the role of a midfield enforcer alongside Owen Hargreaves. The youngster was involved in some controversy when Cesc Fabregas accused him of making the most of a challenge from the Spaniard, but Anderson insists simulation is not part of his repertoire. When asked if he dived against Arsenal, Anderson responded: “No, not at all, I am young but I am very pure on the field. I do not try to trick people with my actions or practice any theatre. “The theatre is for actors, I am a footballer and I just want to play. I saw the comments of the manager and I would rather concentrate on those. “That makes me very happy because those words are coming from one of the best coaches in the world.” |
