Wes Brown will sign a new four-year contract at Manchester United in the next month. The versatile defender is in the last year of his current deal and would be a free agent on New Year’s Day. But Old Trafford chief executive David Gill has met with the England man and his people twice in the last month to thrash out new terms. Brown’s wages of around £30,000 a week will rise by £20,000. Boss Alex Ferguson once described him as “the most technically gifted defender in England”. And the player is convinced that United is the place to be. Brown, 28, said: “This side is right up there with the best. The lads are enjoying themselves and we have a good mix. “We have young lads, senior players and new signings who are really standing out.” |

He's been a great squad player for United. It's a shame he had so many injuries early on in his career - I don't think he's ever really reached the heights everyone thought he was capable of but he's still a very good defender. |

Ferdinand was offered to Fergie when still at West Ham but Fergie declined as he said he had the most naturally talented defender in Britain with Wes Brown. Then the injuries started to kick in. |

Nice to see a bit of loyalty these days. I don't get why other teams fans underrate him so much, I shouldn't care but it gets on my nerves slightly, like when they announce England squads, it's always 'aww Wes Brown again' when there are much, much worse players in the squad :humph: |

i think he's a very good player he's unlikely to break up the central defensive partnership right now so, do you think he should be first choice right back? |

For England? nah I wouldn't think so, he wouldn't be too far down the list though  He's a more natural central defender in my eyes, even though he has had a good spell at RB, like mentioned though he's just never really fulfilled his potential. |

French (I think it was) brought it up in another thread, Neville does seem to be suffering more with injuries as he gets older, and the main problem with Brown was that he didn't get forward/cross aswell, but he seems to be improving. It may seem a little Harsh on Wes, but with Simpson looking like he really has a chance and Rafael coming next year i'd rather give one of them at least a chance when Gary's injured, looking to the future and all that. Don't know if any of the others agree with me though  |

I still regard Brown as makeshift right-back. Admittedly he's looking comfortable playing there this season but I think he's better at centre-back. I think Ole is right - we should see how Simpson and the young Brazilian lad do because they are natural right/wing backs. Brown can still do a job there filling in while they learn their trade. Don't write Gary Neville off just yet though! |

JOHN O’Shea is close to putting pen to paper on a new deal at Manchester United. The versatile Irishman still has a year and a half left to run on his current contract – but is on the verge of tying up a new four-year deal at Old Trafford And he revealed he has no intention of leaving the club he’s been at since he was 17. O’Shea said: “I have this season and the next on my current contract, but I am very close to signing a new deal that will keep me at United into my 30s. “It is something I want to do. I want to stay here, everything is good and this is where I want to be. I have never looked to go elsewhere.” |

Well said. Both get unfair stick from some so called United fans but they are both important members of the squad and rarely let us down. |
