Hicks set to sell stake
Exclusive by Martin Lipton Daily Mirror30/11/2007

Rafa Benitez's war with Liverpool owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks took a stunning twist last night as it emerged one of the two American millionaires is looking for a way out of the club.

City sources confirmed last night that Hicks, who has been at the forefront of the battle with Benitez, is preparing an exit strategy. Barely nine months after arriving at Anfield in a blaze of glory after the £219million takeover, it is understood Hicks has placed a guide valuation of a staggering £1billion on the Merseyside club.

And while that price is seen as ridiculous by City analysts, it emerged last night that Dubai International Capital, the investment group headed by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and who were jilted at the alter by Liverpool 12 months ago, could be ready to make a new bid.

Hicks' relationship with Benitez reached almost total breakdown last week, when the Spaniard was ordered to "quit talking about new players" in the January transfer window.

Benitez expected to be sacked as the row intensified, although a fragile peace was forged ahead of Wednesday's vital Champions League win over Porto, which kept the Reds in the competition.

Hundreds of fans marched on Anfield before the game to show their backing for Benitez.

Liverpool dismiss claim Tom Hicks is set to sell out
Nov 30 2007 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL today emphatically denied reports that co-owner Tom Hicks is looking to sell his shares.

A report today claimed that Hicks was preparing an exit strategy, just nine months after joining business partner George Gillett in a £298m takeover.

Chief executive Rick Parry said today: “I have seen the story, and as far as I am aware it is complete rubbish.”

The report claimed that Hicks had placed a staggering guide valuation of £1billion on the Reds, and that the Dubai International Capital group - who were set to buy the club before the deal collapsed in acrimony - were considering a new bid.

But Anfield supremo Parry, who is in regular contact with the co-owners, insists the story is new to him.

The Americans are currently understood to be working on a £500m refinancing package to fund the new Anfield stadium and and refinance the £298m they borrowed from the Royal Bank of Scotland to buy the club this year.

There have been fears that the duo, who claimed to have “purchased the club with no debt on the club,” could sink the Reds into debt depending on the level of their own personal fortune sunk into the refinancing deal.

The Americans originally took over the club with a loan scheduled to be repaid by 2009.

They always intended to refinance, but a worldwide credit crunch means the terms they are refinancing under are likely to be worse than those received from the RBS.

A £500m loan is 16 times Liverpool’s operating profits for 2007, which are expected to be about £30m thanks to the Champions League run last season.

Manchester United’s level of debt is only eight times their operating profit, but the Americans believe the new stadium plan will very quickly become self-financing.

Arsenal’s move to the Emirates Stadium raised turnover from £37m in 2006 to £200m in 2007 and doubled their matchday revenue from £44.1m to £90.6m over the same period.

But in order to replicate that success, the Reds must maintain money-spinning Champions League progress in the short term.

Meanwhile Pepe Reina today called on the Reds to forget about their European exploits and to prepare for the physical challenge which will be posed by Bolton at the weekend.

He said: He said: “The dressing room is very confident because we are in a good moment.

“It is extremely important for us to keep winning and on Sunday we have a difficult game against a physical team so we have to prepare well for that.”

Indeed - loved his little wave to the camera for us. Was great to hear all the support for him throughout the game, especially the 'Rafa's goign nowhere' song!

It's all been a load of fuss about nothing but if G&H were ever seriously thinking about getting rid of Rafa then i hope they've been shown just how serious the fans are.

Press seem desperate to undermine us and unsettle the team. As soon as it was clear Rafa wasn't going to get sacked immediately they try another tack.

The media must really be starting to worry about our potential challenge. Don't want us upsetting the status quo...

You tell me Stam, I'm sure I don't know. But even when we were at our peak the media liked nothing more than to watch us fail.

Rafa spoke out of turn and the whole thing snowballed from there. We have yet another bout of Crouch being sold dross, Rafa's job being on the line, and now this ownership milarkey. This isn't news that's being reported, it's pap.

Bad journalism is nothing new of course but this sustained pressure smacks of trying to unsettle things at the club.

Well I imagine a lot of fans in the know keep an eye out for Chris Bascombe's articles and he was the first one to turn the story from a case of the owners being p!ssed off with Rafa to more or less saying Rafa's job was on the line.

It happens to all teams esp ones with private owners

According to the press

Glazer will sell Utd to anyone who will give him a profit

Just look at what happened with Jose vs Roman in the press and tell me your team are unfairly reported on.

Every week there are stories coming from "insiders" I think you are just a bit paranoid about it "thumb"
