Sir Alex Ferguson has dropped the clearest hint yet that January will be a quiet month on the transfer front for Manchester United. As usual, the Red Devils have been linked with a host of star names ahead of the transfer window opening. Understandably enough given Louis Saha's horrific injury record, Dimitar Berbatov and Nicolas Anelka are the pair mentioned most often as potential purchases. Ferguson has not tended to do that much business in the New Year sales, although he did sign Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic in 2006 before springing a major surprise by announcing the arrival of Henrik Larsson on a short-term contract 12 months ago. However, the United boss remains cautious about the prospect of bringing in fresh faces, knowing it is not easy to find the necessary quality at a time of year when most clubs are gearing up for major fights at the top and bottom of the table. "I think the squad is good enough," Ferguson told Manchester United's official magazine 'Inside United'. "We don't always get great joy in January, I have to say. "It takes time for players to settle in when they are midway through the season - look at what happened with Evra and Vidic when they arrived - so we are conscious of that. I think the squad is good enough." Having already declared his belief the current United squad is stronger than at any previous stage of his 21-year reign, Ferguson appears willing to let his current players shoulder the burden of a trophy quest on three fronts. The Scot knows Paul Scholes, Park Ji-sung, Ben Foster and Mikael Silvestre will all return from major injuries at various points over the next few months, deepening his reserves of strength still further. "Maybe we are short of cover in the left-back area now Gabriel Heinze has left but other than that, we are okay," he said. Come on Fergie. If anything we need a striker. |

If Evra or one of our strikers gets a long-term injury then we'll have serious problems. I know 'ifs' are difficult to plan for but that's what Fergie gets paid to do. |

Hopefully it's not Veloso, and someone we actually need if anyone. I think a striker depends on Saha, I have no idea what Fergie has planned for him because, let's face it, at the moment we won't get much for him  |

I still maintain that we need a 4th striker better than Dong. We have a couple of players who can play at left-back and Silvestre could be back in March so it's not urgent but we do need better cover long-term. I'm still a bit disappointed we didn't get Bale but there are rumours that Shorey and Lahm may be available in Jan. |

Fergie always buys in Jan. Anything that comes out of his mouth is in someway meant to throw oppostion off. I wouldn't be surprised if he said he didn't need a striker because ole was coming out of retirement then buying anelka the next day! |
