Sir Alex Ferguson claims the atmosphere at Old Trafford in Manchester United’s victory over Birmingham was 'like a funeral'. 74,459 supporters attended the match but the Scot was disappointed with the level of support for his side from the stands. The attack resonated with the words of his former captain Roy Keane, who in 2000 famously labelled a section of United’s support as ‘the prawn sandwich brigade’. Ferguson said: “The crowd was dead. That was the quietest I have heard them. “We needed them in this game, we needed a good atmosphere and we needed to respond to that. “It is all right saying the players will make the crowd respond but in some situations we need them to get behind us. “The players need the crowd to respond and vice versa but it was like a funeral it was so quiet and I don’t think that helped. “We are playing game after game in this period and we need a lift.” It wouldn't have anything to do with your best buddies the Glazers pricing the ordinary die hard fans out of the game would it? |

Very disappointing. Surely 74000 people couldn't have all been as hung over as I was yesterday  Seriously though, I hope the fans are listening and the atmosphere is better for the game against Newcastle. |

Apart from the fact that I could no longer afford to pay for my season ticket the other reason why I let it go was because I was no longer enjoying it. Fans go in fear of being ejected if they dare to stand up and start a chant by the little hitler stewards and the place is fucking swarming with day trippers, out of towners and johnny come lately's. |

Last game I was at I was giving it loads, people around me where staring at us as if we were doing something wrong. With 20 mins to go, myself and my mate were teh only ones left in the whole row. The row behind us only had about 2 people also. Pathetic. |

I know exactly what you mean. If I'm not hoarse by the end of the game then I know something is wrong but I have had a lot of funny looks, especially when sat in the South stand. I've sat next to people who ask daft questions any genuine football fan should know the answer to, people who haven't cheered even when we scored and people who have left at HALF-TIME!!! Why pay for a ticket if you aren't interested in the game and are going to leave before you know the outcome ffs? |

Maybe the club should look at a singing section that has been mentioned before. By putting all the singers together they would make plenty of noise and wouldnt get the weird looks from the other "fans" |

Hmm...

That's the main problem I see, add families to that and thats the trouble with being a worldwide 'brand', people come to see Old Trafford, not the football. |

Manchester United have hit back at a supporter's claim that Old Trafford is like a "police state" which leaves supporters paralysed by fear. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson compared the atmosphere at Tuesday's win over Birmingham to a funeral, urging fans to back the team more vocally. Those comments have upset Colin Hendrie of the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association who accused Ferguson of "a lack of understanding" of the plight supporters face. United themselves, however, rejected any notion that stewards have a heavy-handed approach and claim just three fans were ejected from Old Trafford in the four games prior to Christmas. |
