Avram Grant’s diplomatic approach does not usually extend to embarrassing his players, although that did not stop him handing out a public snub to Ashley Cole as darkness descended upon Stamford Bridge. Perhaps the softly spoken Chelsea first-team coach plans to toughen up his act after all.

After berating Cole for much of the afternoon, Grant stripped him of the captaincy when Didier Drogba was introduced in the 61st minute, even though the Ivory Coast striker has not worn the armband before. Grant confirmed afterwards that he made Drogba captain when he came on because he wanted more leadership on the pitch as Queens Park Rangers attempted to fight their way back into a scrappy match, words that will not go down well with Cole, who was once identified as a future Arsenal captain by Arsène Wenger.

“Didier is a leader,” Grant said. “Many players that are leaders here did not play, so we gave it to Ashley because I think he is a good example for all the others. I like him, so he deserved to be the captain, but there are other options for leaders in the team.”

I was quite shocked when he gave Cole the armband, i thought there were better candidates out there. But i'm not sure that it sets the right example to give the captaincy to a player who was made it clear that he doesn't even want to be at the club. The captains armband should be a privilege and something that you only get after years of sacrifice and loyalty - Terry. Or in the deputy captains case (eg. Lampard) someone who has excelled over a long period of time. Drogba has had 1 good season and has bitched and moaned about wanting to leave, pretty much from the moment he got here.

Chelsea boss Avram Grant has hit out at the negative style of football employed at the club by former boss Jose Mourinho.

The Israeli boss believes that his more attacking style of play is not only proving to be more successful but it is also helping players such as Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack find some form at the club.

Grant said: "Now we are playing with a style which is better for the players who come from outside."

Bloody hell, Grant is so useless he's even invading my dreams with his terrible management skills now. Last night we were losing and he tried to bring on 4 subs at once, even though you can only use 3...and 1 was to replace Cech who was perfectly fit and playing well, with some keeper i've never heard of!

Avram Grant unapologetic about his team’s behaviour, following the sending-off of Michael Essien late into the match at Pride Park.

“I don’t blame the players for questioning the referee as the decision was unfair. They did it in the right way,” he said

“For 30 seconds they said something and then the game continued. What’s wrong with this? I’m thinking about speaking to the FA, but I want to do it in a positive way. I don’t know why we’re being targeted.”

Chelsea coach Avram Grant wants his side to become more lethal in front of goal, after watching them struggle to overcome Reading.

A 33rd-minute header from Michael Ballack helped Chelsea to equal a club record of nine straight wins in all competitions - but they squandered a host of chances to kill off Steve Coppell's visitors.

Grant is now hoping his side can learn from their mistakes and punish teams in front of goal.

"I am very pleased with the performance and that we won," said Grant.

"But we should have scored more goals. We had a lot of chances one-on-one with the goalkeeper. I would be happier if we had scored more goals.

"I think over the last three months, we have seen the development of the team - and how we have kept our style even though we have missed a lot of players.

"I hope that we play like this in every game and create chances, because I don't think we will miss them like we did in this game. I will be very happy if we create five, six or more chances every game - then we will score more.

"If we create so many chances we want to score more. It is good that we win anyway. But we need to put the ball into the net."

Grant was full of praise for match-winner Ballack, who recovered from a calf strain to play in the Barclays Premier League match.

AVRAM GRANT felt his Chelsea side should have left with all three points after his return to Fratton Park.
Pompey's former director of football – now in charge at Stamford Bridge – insisted his side had created the better chances in a ding-dong battle.

And the Israeli also believed Jermain Defoe's equaliser should have been ruled out for offside.
Grant said: 'We had great chances to win the game.

'Shaun Wright-Phillips and others were in front of goal and couldn't score.

'When we are not winning games, we are not so happy – especially when we were winning 1-0.

'We
conceded a goal that looked like it was offside on television, but yes it was disappointing.

Avram Grant has admitted the pressure is building on him following Chelsea's shock FA Cup defeat by Barnsley.

When asked whether he accepted his job may rest on winning either the Premier League of Champions League, the Chelsea manager replied: "I will accept it.

"When I'm responsible for the team, and my team loses at Barnsley, there will be many negative things said about it."

The Guardian claims sources close to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich say he was "incensed" by the 1-0 defeat.

One bad run of results and you're out - you just can't afford to lose here

Henk ten Cate, Chelsea assistant first-team coach

The away supporters at Oakwell could be heard chanting the name of Jose Mourinho, Grant's predecessor, and the Israeli was surrounded by security staff as he left the dug-out at full-time.

Chelsea might be second in the Premier League and in the quarter-finals of the Champions League - but manager Avram Grant is having virtually no impact, according to Danny Fullbrook.

The Blues moved within two points of leaders Manchester United on Saturday after beating Manchester City 2-0, but the Daily Star's Fullbrook reckons the success of the team is despite the manager, not because of him.

He insists the players are so good at Stamford Bridge that the team is basically running itself because Grant has had a minimal impact since replacing Jose Mourinho earlier this season.

"He's not doing anything," Fullbrook told The Sunday Supplement.

"If Chelsea win anything this season it will be despite Avram Grant, not because of him - I've held that view for a very, very long time.

"We've had to read some very well-placed PR about old Avram Grant recently, saying how he fantastically studied Bob Paisley and Brian Clough when he was a young man and how he travelled the world studying the greatest coaches that there are.

"Yet before he got this job he'd never managed outside Israel, so that can't have done him much good!

"I think the hierarchy at Chelsea didn't quite realise or understand how important Jose Mourinho was for winning things.

"Grant hasn't won anything yet, we'll wait and see if he does, but they're like a rollercoaster; the mistakes he has made in the last two months are indicative of an inexperienced manager at the very top.

"His squad is so good and they have so many good players at Chelsea, that the team is almost running itself. In my opinion I don't think it's anything to do with Grant.

No respect

Fullbrook inists there is disharmony within the Chelsea squad under the Israeli boss and he insists he should be replaced in the summer because he is currently little more than a "puppet master".

He continued: "From what I hear, there's a lack of respect. There's no love, there's no unity, there's no admiration for Grant, he just happens to be the figurehead of the team.

"There's much more unity towards Steve Clarke and for me Avram Grant is just a puppet master.

"If Chelsea do win the Premier League and Champions League I'd say it's not because of him, it's because of the players.

"Of course it would be completely churlish to give him no credit at all, but let's wait and see whether he does it first."

I still dont hold out much hope of winning anything this season and that muppet grant should take 99.9% of the blame.

He has made desicions in important matches which in turn have lost us the game and the points required to be above Manure.

Just listen to the supporters and Grant will feel so isolated and unwanted.

I just wish he would go home annonymously and forget about the Chelsea.

Avram Grant says he has not fallen out with Frank Lampard and insists there are no problems with discipline at Chelsea.

Lampard looked far from happy when he was substituted against Fenerbahce in midweek and that kicked off reports of a rift between the midfielder and the Blues' boss.

However, Grant has blasted such talk and says he and Lampard have a good relationship.

"It was our best in Europe this season, but we lost the game," said Grant. "Frank wanted to understand why, that's all. Frank is a very passionate player. He was very disappointed that Fenerbahce had equalised.

"I shook hands with Frank. I like passionate players. If his reaction was good or not, it is an internal matter.

"The discipline at Chelsea has been very good since I've been here. I speak with all the players, but I speak about the game and not something else."

........................

It was our BEST in Europe ?

Grant had his own reasons for celebrating Chelsea's historic victory.

At the final whistle the Blues manager knelt on the pitch and offered a prayer in remembrance of his family members killed in the Holocaust.

The Israeli is due to visit the concentration camp at Auschwitz on Thursday to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

"It was not an easy day for me," he said. "It is Holocaust Day in my country and I was thinking of my father, who buried my grandfather with his own hands, and I am very proud of what we did.

"It was very emotional. I owe a lot to my parents. My father survived the Holocaust and had to bury many of his family but he is the strongest and most optimistic man I have ever met."

Grant was fuming that Curbishley said he would “raise a glass” to Ferguson if United win the title.

He sniped: “I have never seen a comment like this. It’s not a good message for your players.”

Chelsea manager Avram Grant has risked the wrath of the Football Association by questioning the integrity of referee Steve Bennett.

Bennett was in charge of Manchester United's last match of the season at Wigan on Sunday where goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs clinched a 10th Premier League title for Sir Alex Ferguson.

But the official came under fire for failing to award Wigan a penalty and then opting not to send off midfielder Paul Scholes for a second foul on Wilson Palacios.

Although the Chelsea boss continued to congratulate United on their title success, he called Bennett's integrity into question and said he was happy no English referee would be in charge of next week's Champions League final against Ferguson's side.

"I can say that after the game we won against Manchester United to get level on points, we knew that they had to play West Ham at home and Wigan away and that it was not in our hands," said Grant.

"I told you that I believed in the tradition of the fair English game. I will not say anything against it. But what happened is what I expected.

"In England there are very good referees, but there are some - a few that you can influence, like you saw.

"I think in our game against Manchester United at Old Trafford, the referee (Mike Dean) influenced the result for sure. We know that.

"I think the red card for Mikel John Obi in that game should not have been a red card, I think that Paul Scholes should have had a red card on Sunday and Wigan a penalty also. But it is finished. I congratulate Manchester United."

But when asked if he was pleased an English referee would not be in charge of the final in Moscow, Grant replied: "I can say it like this, 'Yes'."
