I agree, but we tend not to spend big :chin:

That's where Wenger differs though, he's laid the foundations whilst sticking around at the top. We've lost ground on the top 3 over a few seasons, particularly when Abramovich changed the shape of the transfer market. That hit us hard, because Utd coped due to the money they'd made and Arsenal were set up for the long-term by Wenger and well managed.

We don't have the time to piss about blooding kids into the team in the next few seasons or we'll lose ground further.

We've got to get on at least equal terms immediately or we'll lose touch completely, and that means we need to spend big in the short term. It's the difference between falling right back into the chasing pack or securing our place in the mix with the big boys.

Which is what Chelsea had to do when Roman arrived .. we had to spend big to compete with Utd and Arsenal - except we got slated for it :wall:

The big difference is that if you look at what Wenger inherited, it was a very solid back four and keeper (which is what is widely acknowledged as the starting point), and some great talent elsewhere on the pitch. He used that as the backbone of the team while bringing in young talent that he could shape into the players he wanted them to be. He's taken time to do so and is now reaping the rewards.

The only players that are still in the Liverpool team compared to when Rafa took over are Gerrard, Carra, Finnan, Riise (but being more sidelined) and Hyypia (more as a backup to Agger when he's fit). And most of the rest of Houllier's squad have moved on.

That's a pretty big change to make, when you consider that the players who have moved on have done so because they were clearly not up to the job, not because they are looking for a new challenge or have retired.

Benitez wants Reds stay - Agent
Rafael Benitez has no plans to walk out of Liverpool in the wake of the latest revelations about his job, claims agent Manuel Garcia Quillon.

Reds co-owner Tom Hicks on Monday admitted attempting to line up Jurgen Klinsmann as the clubs next manager, claiming it was "an insurance policy" should Benitez leave.

The move has been condemned in some quarters as having undermined the Spaniard.

Coupled with his high-profile fall-out with Hicks and co-owner George Gillett at the end of last year, it has cast further doubt over Benitez's long-term future at Anfield.

But Quillon insists his desire to remain at the club is undiminished.

He told The Times: "Rafa wants to stay at Liverpool. He is happy with the club, with the supporters and with the city. He does not want to leave
