Rafael Benitez's position as Liverpool manager has been under threat as inconsistent form has seen the Reds fall off the pace in the league and barely scrape through in Europe.

As well as that, Benitez and the American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett had a confrontation about transfer funds to be allocated in the current transfer window.

After Benitez seemingly backed down, the tension lessened, but a run of four consecutive draws has resulted in media speculation surfacing about his possible departure.

Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been the main name linked with the job and recent reports have described the deal as good as done.

The tactician's representative, Eladio Parames, has responded on his behalf, denying the reports and condemning the lack of professionalism in the media in spreading these rumours.

"Some media have consistently linked Jose Mourinho's name with various clubs without, as they are ethically bound to do, trying to determine the truth of these reports," he said.

"It is unacceptable that the unscrupulous press uses the name of Mourinho when they try to create or profit from current controversial situations in different teams as has happened recently."
