Average and Ordinary

That is how two players (Alan Macinally on Gillette Soccer Saturday and Gary McAllister on Super Sunday) described Liverpool if you take Gerrard and Torres out their side.

Given the amount Benitez has spent assembling his squad, do Liverpool fans think these comments are accurate?

Ooooh hark at her

Not going to deny that we have had years of being ordinary, but then we haven't been throwing cash around like nobodies business...

Credit where credit is due, your record in the Champions League can't be argued with, but when was the last time you were serious title contenders? Given the amount of money spent would you not have expected more?

an average outlay minus sales off 20 mil a year over 4 years with rafa . And think compared to the spending off other clubs we are in the right position . Both man utd and chelsea spent more over that period so hence above us . When we spend as much as them maybe we might be up with them or even above them. Who knows .

Don't think there is any truth in it to be honest, never seen anything about it o any of our sites, so all paper talk by the look of it..

IF it were to happen he'd get my support as all Everton players do but if it were up to me then no, I would touch him with.. Never been impressed with the lad at all. And with us signing Manny Fernandes again I don't think we'd need him to be honest..

Even after transfers out your spending still comes t something like + £40mill over the last 3 - 4 years.. Pretty sure that's more than Utd, definitely more than Arsenal.. So surely when your sending that amount of money you would expect to be fighting for the title rather than battling for 3rd/4th each season??

I know I would be...

If you want to put it in to perspective, Liverpool spent around £27mill on Torres..

For the same amount of money Everton have bought: Arteta, Cahill, Johnson, Yakubu, Stubbs and potentially Pienaar

Oh, so close to sounding like you know what you're talking about...

Torres cost us £21m. His release clause was £26m and we didn't meet it.

And the difference between us and ManU over the last 3-4 years is that at the start of that Fergie had a bloody good squad. Rafa had about 3 top players. So even if we had matched their spending (we haven't), you wouldn't expect the squads to be comparable.

C+, must try harder.

Where are you getting your figures from? The Daily Mirror? :lmao:

Everyone knows Torres was bought at £18 - £20m. The £27m you just quoted was only his buy out clause.

As for the rest, well Rafa has had a total spend, not including outgoings, of about £140m over the past 3 and a bit seasons. Roughly averages out at about £35m each season. Utd paid £27m for Rooney, and £36m for Carrick and Hargreaves combined. Chelsea paid £54m for a pair of benchwarmers in SWP and Sheva.

Then you have to consider money recouped from sales. Rafa made big losses on the players Houllier brought in, but the players Rafa brought in and sold on were usually for break even prices.

I honestly don't know where you think we spent more than Utd over the past four seasons? Certainly not net spends? Who have Utd sold recently to offset their outlay?

Not on a wind up, fella. Just interested in seeing what your opinion is... As for the Torres comparison, just take Johnson off of my list, the point can still be made..
