Steve Bruce faces former club Birmingham on Saturday as Blues travel to his new home at The JJB under the guidance of Alex McLeish. The Wigan boss was forthright in his damnation of the manner in which he departed St Andrews earlier in the season, calling the way in which his tenure in the West Midlands ended ‘unforgivable’. With the scene firmly set for a monumental relegation showdown it will take a mighty effort from Bruce to lead his side to their first Premier League win over Blues in their fourth attempt. Despite that fact Bruce will be confident of getting something out of the game as Blues have won just one of their last 14 away Premier League fixtures, and with The Latics unbeaten in their last four league games at home and having kept clean sheets in all of those games belief will be high. McLeish will also be quietly confident though as his side have scored in their last eight league games, a run only current league leaders Manchester United can better. Wigan are 16 points worse off than they were after 32 games in their first Premier League season but only two points worse off than 2006-07, and The Latics have only ever won one of their 11 Premier League games in April. The home side have Wilson Palacios back from suspension but are still without Michael Brown and Jason Koumas who are serving bans, while Blues are deprived of Franck Queudrue and Liam Ridgewell for the same reason. James McFadden (knee) and Olivier Kapo (hamstring) are both major doubts for the visitors. |
