Michael Ballack believes this weekend's Russian Railway Cup will be vital in Chelsea's preparations for the new season. Blues tackle hosts Lokomotiv Moscow on Friday with the winners facing either AC Milan or Sevilla in the final of the competition. Ballack, who is hoping to make his appearance in pre-season after turning up late for their tour of Asia, knows the Russian tournament will provide a good test for the Luiz Felipe Scolari's men. "Now we play against much better teams and after it we will know where we are and we will see," Ballack told Chelsea TV. "It is very important for us as after this we have no more friendly games and that is why it is very important for us." "I think it will be a good tournament." |

Chelsea again suffered a shootout defeat in Moscow this evening, losing on penalties to Lokomotiv Moscow in the Railways Cup following their UEFA Champions League final loss to Manchester United in May. The stakes were much lower this time, however, as Luiz Felipe Scolari's men fell to the Russian heavyweights 5-4 after their semi-final had ended 1-1. It was Andriy Shevchenko who missed the fatefull kick, sending Lokomotiv into Sunday's final where they will meet Sevilla, 1-0 victors over AC Milan in the other last-four match. Chelsea dominated play from the start and went into the lead through Michael Essien, who fired home on 27 minutes after Nicolas Anelka fed him on the edge of the box following Deco's precise cross from the right. After the break, the Blues continued to dominate play but their hosts nevertheless managed to equalise through defender Ruslan Kambolov, who beat Petr Cech with a well-struck free-kick with six minutes to go. In a penalty shootout that followed, Cech parried the opening spot-kick by Lokomotiv skipper Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, but Ivan Pelizzoli denied Wayne Bridge's attempt later to level the scores. Pelizzoli saved Shevchenko's shot to put his side into the final. In the other semi-final, AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso's own goal earned Sevilla victory. Chelsea will now play the Italian giants in the third-place play-off. |
