...................

Dear Students:

Welcome to ISB !! We hope that you have started settling down into your new homes and are enjoying Term 1. When we look back to our first term on campus we clearly remember it being one balanced between eager anticipation of the year ahead and a lot of questions. As alums we can definitely help with the latter.

As is the case every year, alumni from BCG will be visiting campus this Thursday (April 28) for an informal interaction to help "de-mystify" the ISB experience !! The whole idea is to spend an evening with all of you, and as alums, help answer all the questions and concerns you might have regarding life at ISB, academics, co-urriculars/extra-curriculars, careers and a variety of other topics.

This is an informal session and we would like you to take advantage of it. Please do not hesitate to raise whatever questions you might have and we'll do our best to help you out. The questions can be broad-based and need not be limited to consulting.

We will be starting at 9:45pm and can go on till as long as you want !!
The alum team will be:
Ankush Wadhera, Consultant (Class of 2008)
Karthik Valluru, Consultant (Class of 2009)
Venue: AC 4 LT
Date: April 28 from 9:45pm onwards
We look forward to meeting you on campus.
Regards,

For all the consulting career enthusiasts who have missed out this wonderful session from BCG alums, I am posting a few points discussed by the BCG alums:
_________________________________________
• Speakers:
o Ankush Wadhera – wadhera.ankush@bcg.com +91 98204 77005
o Karthik Valluru – valluru.karthik@bcg.com +91 98991 11122
If you wish to reach out to BCG alums in general, send a mail to indiaISBalums@bcg.com
• Academic focus for consulting
o Grades/Spikes:
Both the speakers opined that being a Dean’s lister is not the necessary &required criteria. On your CV, Consulting companies look for your Analytical skills (Grades, previous acads etc.), academic work @ ISB(Case competitions, quality ELP & pro-bono projects etc..,), Leadership in ISB and before ISB. So you can analyze your profile and find those spikes and leverage them during ISB time.
The speakers gave instances of alums who did not hold any official leadership position but contributed significantly to ILC, Solstice etc., and highlighted the same as leadership spike on their CV.
One of the speakers is a Dean’s lister while the other was president of the consulting club. But both of them opined they had a clear cut idea on what they wish to get out of ISB and worked specifically on those focused areas.
o Elective Specialization: You need not have to specialize in Strategy or general management to get into consulting.
o Do not spread yourself thin. Focus on one or two areas that are either your strength or that you want to improve on. Consistency across their past and current profiles and success in a few focus areas is the secret recipe to crack a consulting job while making your stay @ ISB fruitful.
For eg: Karthik has a CA background pre-ISB and hence focused on Marketing & Consulting activities in ISB. At the same time, he did Specialization in Marketing(Development area) & Analytical Fin(his strength) at ISB.
• ELP & Other projects: Again don’t spread yourselves thin. Do an ELP or other projects, only if you think you can make significant commitment to it.
Probono Consulting projects are a good simulation of the real consulting work and hence students are encouraged to pursue those projects along with ELP.
• Outbound Exchange: If you want to pursue Outbound exchange opportunities purely for placements, it is futile. Some exchange programs start post-placement season. Some schools do not allow ISB students to participate in their placement process and student also have to face problems like visas etc.,
• Consulting Career in BCG:
Consultants start their careers as Generalists working in wide varieties of roles and verticals. Over the years, they identify and become specialists in specific verticals.
o Hierarchy in BCG :
Associate->Sr. Associate->Consultant-> Project Lead->Principal->Partner
Associate are typically recruited from undergrad level(IITs etc.).
ISB students normally start at Sr. Associate level and it takes 24 months in BCG to move to consultant level and around 6 years to reach Principal level.
Students with higher relevant work-ex can be recruited even at Consultant level or work towards an expedited move to consultant level after joining BCG.
• Short listing process: All resumes reviewed by two panels and graded accordingly. A thumbs up from both panels puts the individual on the short list. The reverse is also true. In case of one supporting and one dissenting vote, detailed discussions and conference calls are made to evaluate. Recommendations from campus ambassadors are also taken into account.
• Exit Options in Consulting: A few options:
o 2 years into Consulting, PE firms are a popular option. Consultants move to PE firms as Analysts/Associates. Strategy/General Management roles in Industry is another popular option.
o Senior people(Project Lead/Principal) with around 5-7 years exp join industry as VP-Strategy, BU leads, Line managers etc.,
o Consultants at very senior levels also join as CXOs.
• Potential new consulting placements for ISB:
o Monitor is put a lot of efforts to expand their footprint in India
o ISB was not successful in getting Bain on the campus for the last few years. Prof. Ravi Bapna is a very good friend of one of the Bain Partners.
Consulting club should start early in their recruitment effort with these two firms.
