Chase watched as Inez adjusted the filly's halter, moving to behind her ears in case Athena decided to take off. He glimpsed the bit Inez had chosen for the filly's first and he shook his head ruefully at her choice, but he said nothing. He would have gone with a schule starter bit since it offered tongue relief, the combo metals used prevented oxidation. But that was his opinion. As Inez held the bit and bridle up near Athena's muzzle, the filly pulled her ears back and snorted loudly, shaking her head in agitation. Chase slipped down off the rail, just as Athena tried to rear up, twisting her head to the side, away from the bit and bridle. The filly was ready to bolt away, but Chase was soon at her head, holding the halter firmly. "You should get the bit between her teeth first. Then she'll deal with the bridle. One thing at a time, she's not used to this." Chase soothed Athena, waiting until she calmed again before he nodded at Inez. "Now try again. But let her see the bit first."

Inez had moved slowly and had started by just letting the bridle rest on Athena's face with the bit close by her muzzle. But Athena had other ideas and she let Inez know quickly that she didn't like the bridle or bit. Her ears flicked back and she snorted, shaking her head and dislodging the bridle. Inez moved quickly as Athena tried to rear, shaking her head from side to side. Before Inez could react, Chase was there, having grabbed the halter to keep Athena from bolting. <i>'You should get the bit between her teeth first. Then she'll deal with the bridle. One thing at a time, she's not used to this.'</i> Inez waited until Athena was calmed down again. <i>'Now try again. But let her see the bit first.'</i> Inez was a little confused about how to get the bit in her mouth first and said as much. <b>"Well, that first attempt didn't work as well. And since I'm not quite sure what you are talking about....would you mind showing me? I've never done it any way except for just bridling them as quickly as possible but since she hasn't ever had a bridle on, I wanted to do it slowly with her. Can you show me what you mean?"</b> Inez wasn't so proud that she was above learning and if she could learn a different way to train young, green horses, she wanted to learn a different way.

"Here, hold her a second." Chase moved around to stand before the filly, taking the bit and bridle from Inez, allowing her to hold the filly's halter. He turned the smooth metal bar over and over in his hands, allowing his body heat to meld with the piece. He held it up, high enough so that Athena could see it. He ran it along the sides of her mouth, then across the front of her muzzle, giving the filly time to see and understand that the bit wasn't going to jump up and bite her. Nostrils quivering, Athena unleashed a nervous snort, dancing in her high stockinged legs, ears pitching forward and back. "Sssh, its ok girl." Chase soothed Athena, rubbing her forehead until she calmed down. He then held the bit against her lips, applying light pressure until eventually Athena's mouth opened and he quietly placed the bit between her jaws. Athena quickly spat it out. Chase patiently picked it up, wiped it off and tried again. It took another try before the filly finally accepted the bit fully and Chase shot Inez a pleased grin. "Get the bridle on her, I think she'll accept it now."

Inez took hold of Athena's halter and gently rubbed the filly's cheek with her fingers, hoping that the gesture would help the filly remain calm. This was going to be a first for her and if things went well, maybe they would have her fully geared up by the weeks end. Inez handed Chase the bridle and then he worked the cool metal between his hands until it was warmed up just a little and it wouldn't be such a shock to the inside of Athena's mouth. Chase let Athena see the bit and then worked it over the sides of her mouth and over her muzzle. Athena snorted, dancing around and ears flicking back and forth. Chase soothed her by rubbing her forehead and once she was calmed down, he gently worked the bit against her teeth until she opened her mouth and he slipped the bit in. She immediately spat it out but after cleaning the dirt off it, he worked it back into her mouth and this time she didn't spit it out. Inez breathed a soft sigh of relief as Chase shot her a pleased grin. At his order, she picked up the leathers of the bridle and quickly but gently slipped it over her ears being careful to not manipulate the ears too much. The bridle had no reins attached for this particular part just in case Athena broke free of their grip and they couldn't catch her right away. The reins then wouldn't catch around her legs and scare her worse. Inez smiled at how quickly Athena had accept the bit. But would she accept the leather on the sides of her face and behind her ears?

Inez's touch was soothing and Athena stood quietly, chewing lightly on the bit, testing it, working it with her teeth and tongue. But it was tolerated. Feeling the leather across her cheek, the filly snorted, shook her head, stamped a hoof, whipped her tail around, but in the end, she tolerated that too. She nickered a complaint at Inez, pushing her slim muzzle into the woman's hands, seeking treats for what she thought was good behavior. Chase grinned, pleased at how well the filly was doing. She was a smart horse, that much was clear. "You have a good eye for horses. She's a keeper." Whether she would tolerate the saddle as easily, Chase couldn't really say. "Want to give her some time to adjust? Or should we push on?"

(I know its hard for horses to chew on treats and such with bits in their mouths. If I give her a piece of carrot, will she be able to eat it?)
