Yeah I got the best Economy and most Kms in a tank over the weekend too: Got approx 850 Kms to the tank !! Was a 7 hour drive either way up to Grafton (NSW), Avg speed was about 100 Km/h and was using BP Ultimate 98 and Shell V Power 98. |

filled up 2 weeks ago and the red light just came on today managed to get 540km from full tank to red light coming on all city driving with a/c on...with the occasional right foot smash ![]() so 540km from 57.83lt (95RON) = 9.33km / lt OR 10.7lt / 100km does this mean...you could drive ~60km on red light before ithe car dies? sound right?? |

General city driving (stop start) Few blats here and there but mainly trying to keep off boost. With spirited driving I've recorded as low as about 50kms per 10L! Yup GReddy kit with Emanage, A:F around 10:1 when on boost over 3000rpm though LOL! |

It is a bit rich, thats at night though, the A:F seems a bit twitchy, now running back at around 12.5:1 again >.< Was the stock tune. Going for a proper tune soon when I can get my shit into gear |

Just an Apexi Timer wired into the 02 sensor so its not 100% exact. Calculates the A:F ratio according the the 02 sensor voltage No fancy wideband Lamba sensor sorry |

Then the AF ratio figures are near meaningless. The 0-1v factory o2 sensors are only designed to give meaningful readings around stoich - they are used for fuel trim in closed loop - but absolutely no use whatsoever for tuning or to give readings thatr stray from 14.7 by much at all. If you were indeed running 10:1 you would see it coming out the tail pipe. We run really rich in the charade on high boost (10.5 - 11:1) and get a similar thing. It does cool the charge, but you also sacrifice some power to run that rich. AL |

Is black smoke under boost a sign that the mixture is too rich or too lean? Or could it be the boost blowing the spark out causing a missfire? |

AL - its actually fairly accurate when compared to a wide band sensor, compared it when it was on the Torque dyno and was right on or bloody close at all times! Leiden - black smoke is normally just oil burning, fairly normal for a turbo |

black smoke is a rich fuel mixture. blue smoke is burning oil. i'd be slightly worried if you were burning enough oil to see it, especially if you are running a catch tank or have no PCV back into your inlet. if you were getting a miss, you'd notice it. |

It's an old thread I know but I've been doing a bit of an experiment with my standard air filter box in relation to my fuel consumption and power. I did three tests, the first was running the car with it's factory set up, the second was with the flap in the air intake disconnected (that's the one that opens at about 4500rpm to let the air into the box) and the third was with the flap disconnected and the lid on the air box removed. My car is a 2001 RS200Z, tiptronic it's done a little over 42000kms, the engine is standard apart from a K&N air filter, all the driving in the tests were mostly around town and what I would consider to be "normal" driving. With each test I filled the car up three times with Shell Ultra (95). Between tests I filled up again after adjusting the air box to try to allow for the car to adjust to the change. I used the power button only when I felt it was needed, I live up the top of a hill so everyday the car has a bit of climb to do and I didn't use the A/C a lot except for Test 3 when I must have used it about 75% of the time. Test 1, factory set up: 51 litres 445km = 11.46ltr/100km 51 litres 468km = 10.89ltr/100km 51.5 litres 469km = 10.98ltr/100km Average consumption: 11.11ltr/100km Test 2, flap disconnected: 52 litres 419km = 12.41ltr/100km 51.5 litres 441km = 11.68ltr/100km 51 litres = 451km = 11.31ltr/100km Average consumption: 11.8ltr/100km Test 3, no flap and no lid: 52 litres 421km = 12.35ltr/100km 52 litres 438km = 11.87ltr/100km 51 litres 442km = 11.5ltr/100km Average consumption: 11.91ltr/100km So not really a lot in it, as far as power increases or decreases go, I thought the car felt like it performed better in Test 3, smoother idle, smoother running, a little more grunt? even the gear changes felt better. For a comparison it kinda felt like I was driving with the power button on in the factory set up but I wasn't, I hardly ever used it in Test 3 because it just didn't feel like I needed it but without proper testing I can't say for certain what power increases there were, it's just my 2 cents worth, I will probably continue to run the car in Test 3 mode, the car kinda sounds better too

Not much in it? It's over 7% worse without the lid, that's a huge difference. If petrol went up by 7% that'd be about 12 cents, and you'd complain then. Doesn't the power button just increase the point where it automatically shifts, rather than actually increasing power in any way? You could very well be expecting it to run better without the lid, and therefore tricking yourself into thinking it's better. Note with no lid it'll suck in far warmer air (especially on longer distance drives), which isn't preferable. |
