Interesting quote that's worth being wary of:

Almost everything you need to fit the motor is standard Toyota parts. I have proven that with my 1JZ conversion. Have a look at IS300.net and they will always tell you how hard it is to fit anything!!!!!. All it takes is a little research and a good relationship with your local Toyota dealer. When you look at his list this is what I have done: Engine mounts - made fabricated steel mounts - could have used IS300 2JZ mounts just a easily but didn't like the price from Lexus. Upper & lower oil pans - used Chaser front sump upper and lower pans. Fan assembly - standard Soarer 2.5GT-T engine fan that came with motor. If he means the radiator fans I have used standard IS200 fans. Coolant lines - Soarer 2.5GT-T radiator hoses. Trans Mount - standard Lexus IS200 mount (redrilled rubber mount holes 15mm forward on gearbox to suit location). Driveshaft - standard Landcruiser front shaft assembly. Shifter - standard JZA80 shifter (shortened by approx 50mm) Don't be put off by someone raving about how hard it is - it is not rocket science to do this conversion. Just take you time and think about it before attempting it. |

So far I have spent $13,800 and still about $2000 to go. But that is because I only put in the best of anything. It could be done for less. If someone purchased my J160 gearbox that will help offset some of the costs. The most expensive part was the gearbox because I wanted a Getrag V160 box. I did a 1JZ into a VL Commodore and it only cost $5000 incl the half cut. Depends on how fancy you want to go. When finished will write-up a complete technical article on it for the club. |

Graham is right, I also used all toyota parts, except for the mounts. The Gearbox (W58 JZA80 NA) goes right on the stock box mount. I didnt spend as much as Graham, only about a grand less, because I paid labour on top, and di not use the VVti motor, much cheaper gearbox, (His is getrag 6 speed, about 2-3k, mine is the 5 speed, about 500-$800!) So, it helps if you can do the work yourself. |

Keep us posted on that new car, Pugsly! Toymods is a great place to read about the dos and don'ts of engine mods - guys on their drop all sorts of engines into just about everything! The recent Lextreme meet was another interesting event to see just what can be done. The Cressida with the Lexus 1UZ V8 was VERY impressive, it looked like a stock install. The Mk3 Supra with the 1UZ V8 was rather impressive too, and the Datsun 240Z with the 1UZ was madness! Remote oil cooler in the back and other crazy customness, but it all works! It's all about the know how i guess! And, patience is a virtue.... |
