Hi My parents own a Altezza and we are moving to Australia and we were woundering if its possible to take the car. Does anyone know the regulations that are needed 2 import a car over there? and if we can take it how much would it cost?

All suggestions are welcome.
Thank you

PM Greeneyes, he is currently in the process of taking his Altezza to OZ.

Following a conversation with him, he stated a few problems. Lexus do there best to stop them being imported and they have to go thru exhaust tests- Even tho they have the same engine as the Lexus???

The AS model has the same 2L 6-cyl engine as the Lexus IS200, the RS has the 2L 4-cyl BEAMS engine.

It will not be an easy process taking one over and but it's something I'd consider myself. I've moved to Australia and back for work and got stung buying/selling cars both ways.

You apply tp Dept Transport & Regional Services for Approval to Import a Vehicle. Costs $50.

Costs about $3500 to ship, depending on how you do it. You supply proof of ownership, purchase price, immigration & lots of BS...

They take purchase price, add cost of shipping & hit you 10% duty.

Then they take purchase price, plus shipping, plus duty and charge you 10% GST on top!!!

Then another $350 inspection fee...

I think you can get import plates and own it like it is, but problems come when trying to get it roadworthied to sell it. Last year on here Yangfan reckoned he did one legally and had to get it emission tested at a cost of a couple of thousand bucks!! They won't test the engine type and approve it, you have to get each car through the full manufacturers test. So he said..

I'm still not sure of it all, the application for Greeneyes is in and I have the application for the Datsun 1600 I'm taking over right here on my desk. That goes in under a much easier regime as it is more than 15years old. Its only hard to import recent Jap imports.

Its a way to make sure the Aussie car fleet stays old and decrepit!!

I owned it originally ($43000 !!!) and sold it to my wife a while back for under $20k.

Usually I put cars on the Company to start with, pay the Fringe Benefit Tax and claim the depreciation, but this time I didn't.

Where are you moving to Eric?

Picked a moving company yet? How much do they want?

Are you taking just one car?

For a smaller than average houseload of rubbish and two cars its costing $12000 to $15000 straight to the moving ompany, depending on which one. Other costs come on top of that.

They vary in how they are going to do it, some are going to put all our stuff in with other people's, some are going to ship a 20' and a 40' just for us. I haven't decided yet.

I'm meant to be going in three weeks... rofl
