Can anyone tell me anything about a 1990 Imported MR2 GT turbo? A guy wants to swap for my black IS200 + $$$. Would I be stupid to do this? Thanks |

I would personally make a movie about you being as stupid as you would be if you did this. Note. Are you in NZ or AUS? You can pick up an MR2 Turbo just over 100,000kms 1992 for around 5k, you would pay well over 15k for your car here. Don't get me wrong, tickle the suspension, have a play in the engine department and its a hell of a car that will exceed your tallent 90% of the time... |

Go drive an MR2 first and make sure you can fit in the car comfortably, then decide what luggage you will ever need to carry... drive it in traffic and open road, and see how easily you can get in and out.. I had a Lotus Europa when I was young (and single...) a totally unpractical car but great for just blasting around the countryside exactly as I do in the Altezza. I much prefer the Altezza as it can do so many other things as well. |

gen 1 (1989 - 1991) - do not get this generation as they have smaller front brakes and rear wheels tends to oversteer alot when u brake in corner, very dangerous to drive in wet. gen 2 (1991 - 1993) - has improved braking and wider wheel base, safer but same horsepower as gen1 (225 hp) gen 3 (1994 - 1996) - bigger turbo (245 hp), facelift rear brake light and rear wing gen 4 (1997 - 1998) - not much different than gen 3, might have move the side indicator from front to side... gen 5 (1999 - 2000) - turbo increase to 255hp, clear front corner light, facelift rear wing and if u get G-limited (NA) it has the same red engine cover like Celica (Beam) 2litre 200hp. so if u want to get a turbo MR2, get at least gen 3 for the look and performance... |

Keith, these are like a 4WD compared with an SW20 MR2! My Dad had one of these when he was younger as well.... must have been a right of passage back in those days  Rory: Glenn (RS200 and MR2 GT owner) and I swapped cars at the last Wakefield day. He had trailered the MR2 GT down to Wakefield. You can read my blabbering about this in the Wakefield thread but what was interesting is we both stepped out of each others car after the session basically saying the same thing: the MR2 GT motor (or something like it) in the Altezza chassis would be a dream result. The MR2 'mid-ship' layout is awesome, for sure, but the Altezza chassis is that much more forgiving (longer wheelbase), and therefore more entertaining. I guess you also come back to the same thing: the Altezza chassis does alot of what more 'focused' layouts can do without their compromises (you still get 4 doors etc). |
