I thought Altezzas had hydralic tappets under the cam, so never needed setting, but nick looked up the workshop manual and they are standard bucket & shim type. To reset the gaps you measure them all with feeler guages, take apart the ones that have the wrong gap and replace the shim with one of a different thickness that gives the right gap. If the valve seats wear the valves move up in the head and the gap vanishes, then it stops closing and you burn teh vlve edge and get a chuffing sound. If the valve top/shim or bucket wears then the gap gets bigger, the cam doesn't open the valve as much and you hear a tapping sound. If you have had this done- How much did it cost? How long did it take? Where did you get it done? ...and how many Km had you done. I haven't heard anyone mention having tappets done, yet we have cars on here with over 150,000km. cheers http://www.alltrac.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26320 |

I have had the whole head rebuilt at christmas. I don't think they did the shims though, and also with the manual heads, they have titanium valves on exhaust side and can't be skimmed if worn as they tend to break. Celica RA45 will be able to tell you more, as he has had quite a bit to do with them. They shouldn't wear as they have hardened vavle seats in the head, so if they start getting very noisy there is probably something else wrong. I would say you shouldn't see any problems till lots of km on the clock. (250,000+ km) Corey |

OK, nick looked up the diagrams. Part 13753 on the 3SGE is a replaceable shim coming in various thicknesses. The 1GFE has lifters (13751) that come in various thicknesses to do the same job.

man, it's pictures like that that make me wonder how many parts there are for these cars, as in, pull apart, and catalog bit by bit, and number them. There must be squillions. |

For the manual and auto there are also different size valves aswell, and the valve stems are different lengths so nothing is interchangable Been through that... Corey |

they should be checked every 50,000 kays ,just to be sure the valves arn,t closing up there clearences ,mainly the inlet has a tendency to pound it self into the seat and the exhaust has a tendency to drop its head off the valve .This is only the manual motor as the auto uses steel valves and they seem to be fine so far in my race motor ,better than titatium thats for sure shims are the same as gen 3 3sge and also 2tg and 18rg motors |

What do you mean sensory method? I.E. How to measure valve clearance? I have a service manual for the 1G-FE I could have a look for you? |

I haven't done an Altezza engine yet, but have done a few 4age's, I used to just flip the shims over as they can go in either way, check with the feeler gauge to make sure it's in spec though. Only works once though

I did this when I changed the head gasket. Its not to hard to check the clearance, but if the shims need changing then its cambelt off, cams removed etc, which is quite a lot of work.I dont know what a shim is worth, but I only had one valve with to much clearance.I made a shim as I have access to a lathe and surface grinder. The shim material is about the same hardness as a grade 8.8 bolt, which is what I used.If the valves are found to be to tight, the shim can be sanded down by hand to suit. |
