Idling Too Low

I left my lights on (again) and when I jump started it, it's idling too low (again). However last time when I reset the ECU (ecu, etcs and efi fuses for 10 minutes then inserted again), everything was fine. This time however it's not helping.

I don't think it's the idle controller as I have fixed this issue by simply resetting the ECU on previous occasions and it's stayed working until this time. Anyone heard of this before or know what to do? I'm going to leave the fuses out until morning as it might give it time to completely reset any onboard RAM.

MAF Sensor? Air Filter?
Checked oil level? (did it when I forgot to check the oil...)
Or just tighten the throttle cable LOL

Could be all the extra load the flat battery is putting on the alternator?

Clean the maf sensor, check for air leaks after the maf sensor also, I noticed pulling off the PCV hose makes the car idle a bit crappy.

I'd suggest clean the MAF sensor, and get a new battery.
I had simlar problems which looked like MAF sensor with rough idle, all gone after new battery was installed.

Thanks for the suggestions guys but remember, the car was idling 100% in the morning and when I got back to the car, after jumpstarting, idle was consistently low. Night and day. It wasn't a gradual onset, it suddenly happened after the jumpstart. I would assume I fried something but the ECU is still working fine and fuses all intact.

So the battery is 100% charged?

When I picked up my auto Altezza I imported from the storage yard I drove it back to whangarei with a flat battery and I noticed it was idling low and cut out, also lights dipped when using the brakes.

Same thing happened with my honda, you drain the battery completely flat and force 80 or so amps into it with the alternator and the battery cooks, you have to TRICKLE charge a completely dead battery.

Both the Honda and Altezza idled low with a flat battery. In both occasions replacing the battery fixed the problem.

Replace the battery, or at least find one with a good charge and try that. 99% sure thats going to fix the problem mate,

its possible you may need a new battery as your old one may have dropped a cell. low idle may be caused by the extra alternator draw as leiden said, as the current battery isnt charging/holding charge properly

if you need a battery or want to try, I've got a spare one with around 350-400CCA left in it (i think originally a 500CCA) not the best, but you can have it for free- thats if its still where i last left it :) it came out of my gita. one thing though, its the larger size, so if your tezza (which most sedans do) have the small original battery, you'll need to upgrade your battery post clamps (which is not a bad idea to do anyway, costs around $25ish) and the battery holder if it doesnt fit the bigger battery.

Cheers guys. It's happened a few times now so maybe this last time was enough to fry the battery. I'll test with a spare and see if it helps. I thought it looked like alternator pull because the lights were dimming when I hit the brakes but by the time I got home it wasn't doing it anymore.

-DC- thanks mate, I'll give you a buzz if I can't find my spare :)

I know wagons and IS300's have large posts, I have seen many altezzas with smaller posts, so i dunno; could have either been done in japan or factory option for a larger battery?

Factory they had small posts.

But most people ditched them right away for the larger posts to fit larger battries (I did that too!)

TPS (throttle position sensor) or could be one of your Cam Angel Sensors get the car hooked up to a computer and get it checked...

Haha, my steering wheel is made from unicorn hide.

Seriously xero, I hope it's not something that serious but I'm getting a new battery today so we'll know for sure.

New battery, same thing

I took it for a quick spin and it actually feels like the timings retarded. Much less torque and VVTi doesn't kick in properly.

My car used to idle quite low when I first got it. I cleaned what I can only assume to be the intake air temp sensor which is located in front of the throttle body & now it idles normally. But you said it was fine before you jump started it. Am I right ? Only thing to do now is try another ECU & see if the problem persist I guess.

Drive it for a while, takes a little time until the ecu learns a few settings,

The auto altezza I had took a few trips to drive properly, even with a new battery it would cut out pulling to a stop, after a couple days of driving it sorted its self out.

When i bought a new battery it cut out because of low idling but like Leiden said, after a few times it was fine.

Hmm, I might have sent it in prematurely. I just got annoyed <_< Maybe the mechanic will mistakenly think it's the coils or alternator and replace it for me
