Hey,

This has happened around 4 times since ive had the car, and it happened yesterday. Ill be driving along, then all of a sudden the (check engine??) light in top right hand corner comes on, (at the same time yesterday as well the TRC off light came on and i couldnt turn it off) then you start slowing down, like the cars turned off but it still has power, put your foot down nothing happens.

Then i eventually come to a stop, turn the car off, turn it on and its sweet again, drives fine.

Anybody else had this happen to them. Once you turn the car back on its fine like nothing happened.

It's going into limp mde for some reason, you need to take it to someone who can get the codes and find out what's wrong with it. Toyota dealer would probably be my first stop

I dont think its limp mode.

Car still has power because ign is still on, motor is still spinning so power steer keeps working, but engine is not firing.

Limp mode allows you to continue driving.

You have some sort of intermittent fault with the computer or critical sensors. Like your crank angle sensor has dropped out (ie not sending a signal).

Get a lexus service center to run diagnostics.

Bridge E1 & Tc on the diagnostics connector in the engine bay, then follow this guide to work out the codes:

Reading Error Codes from CEL

Then look them up in the attachment to this thread, look for the two digit code in brackets

Nah he says he still has power, just no go when he puts his foot down.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see what he comes back with...

The car has stalled, engine and all its accessories are being driven by the momentum of the car, makes quite similar noises to when the engine is running.
If it were in limp mode he would be able to continue driving, with imposed conservative ign timimg and rev limits.

If you can get codes outof it then thats good! Get to it!

I have the same problem with it trying to stall intermittently but if you put the clutch in and rev it fast enough you can catch it and keep it driving... I believe it may be the TPS and need to find a good one to test this theory.

The biggest problem is how far between faults this is so it is really hard to find.

It happened to me when I was loosing traction in the wet. The light came on but I could still drive. I think it was because I lost traction.

The traction light would have came on but not the engine check light.... that's just from loosing traction with traction control on.

Its most likely the TPS or Electronic Throttle Control motor, like its been mentioned before try and get the codes off the ECU, that will point you in the right direction...

Yeah i know....after posting that i planned on getting the codes but then forgot about it. It hasn't happened since.

If it only happens once every 6 months + then its probably not worth it for me to go and have it looked at after getting the codes.

Hey guys,

Ok i just thought i'd post a response on here regarding a pretty similar (if not possibly the same) issue.

To be specific, the problem with mine was easily reproducable simply by reving the engine to past 6-6000rpm or so, in which case i would almost always get that same behaviour - engine light coming on, and the engine going into some sort of a safe mode forcing me to pull over and restart the car, in which case i could drive off as normal.

I took it to a mechanic and it would appear after getting the code checked out etc, the issue was in the throttle body, basically i need a new one. Apparently it is a known fault?

I wouldn't say whole throttle body, but the throttle position sensor (TPS) on the throttle body is a known fault. Talk to xNickx for a price on one, and it's a job you could do yourself if you have a couple screwdrivers.

Thanks for the heads up Solied Altezza :), well in the case of mine it looked like the sensor itself was beyond repair and i had to get a replacement from Toyota. Just got the car back yesterday and it now drives beautifully.

This happened to me yesterday (engine cuts out, check engine light comes on and trc light sometimes flashes), it had happened to me before but I can always just start it up again and it will be good to go, yesterday though I couldn't even drive it (it would turn itself off).

Took it to mechanic today and they diagnosed a faulty accelerator sensor. Will cost just under $500 to fix.

It is the other sensor on the throttle body,
3 plugs total on the throttle body
TPS
APS (Accelerator Position Sensor)
Throttle motor

Opposite side to the TPS(I think TPS is on the outboard side from memory?)

The APS works the same as the TPS but measures how much you have you foot down, (via cable from the pedal) then the computer along with magic smoke and electrons works out what the throttle motor will do (depending on alot of other sensors, traction control etc) to move the butterfly. TPS just measures where the butterfly is.

Hope this helps

Cheers
