Oil Gauge Moving Up And Down *under Battery Gauge*

I have just realized the oil gauge inside the speedo , just under the battery charging gauge , it moves from half way up and down back to half way , when idle it moves to half way , and when I drive it moves up ......hum is that normal or something is wrong

and what gauge is that anyway

Normal :)

It's oil pressure.

Moves slower with thicker oil, and if you go to a thin oil (like 5W30 or less) it will move super fast :P .

If it doesn't rise, that is when you start to worry :P

Totally normal, nothing to worry about. Oil pressure rises & falls with the engines revs. As long as it doesn't drop to low, say under 1/3 everything is ok. Any lower & I'd be looking at new oil.

I'm running Castrol Edge 5W30 and the guage doesn't move at all hardly, the highest I've ever seen it go was about half way and it didn't stay there long. On a cold start it sits on the first notch until the vehicle is warm then it sits on about the third one.

Either my pressure reader is poked or somethings wrong with the pressure relief system. Havn't spun any bearings so its probably the former...

I'm running the same oil in mine & it sits about 2-3 notches down from the top when driving & 1-2 under half way at idle. Maybe your sender is stuffed?

I had a quick look at the lubrication system diagram and the pressure relief valve and pressure sender valve are both pre-filter, when I killed a rod there was a little crap off the bottom of a piston connecting with the crank counter-balance that got through the oil pump and into the pre-filter oil system.

When blowing it out and cleaning I possibly missed some of it and its either blocked up the oil pressure sender or jammed the pressure relief valve from closing properly, either way I'll have a good look at it tomorrow.

That also means that the oil feed for the turbo is non filtered!

Where abouts is the relief valve located and also the sender unit? My gauge is sitting about 3/4 under normal driving but dropping to 1/2 when at idle this is when oil would be warm, any ideas? I'm doing an oil change tomorrow as oil looks rather filthy. But whilst the car is jacked up I wouldn't mind checking the other things. Also how to clean the relief valve?

Cheers

Both are internal prior to the filter as mentioned in Leiden's reply

So I did an oil change this morning edge 5w30 ryco filter. And normal drive the gauge will sit not on the H notch but 2 below it or just under so just over 3/4. Then when on idle at lights or stop sign will drop straight to half way.. Any ideas or is this normal?

It seems that with 5L of oil it'll only be about 3/4 of "Full" by the gauge. Pretty normal I guess :)

It's an oil pressure gauge not a oil level gauge..

Sounds about normal to me

Should be 3/4 over 3K as oil pressure is relative to engine speed till the oil relief valve opens. Thicker oil = more pressure. Should never be below 1/3. If it is either your oil has lost its viscosity, your running out of oil or you journal bearings are worn.

Thicker oil also = more resistance = less hp. Not necessarily a good thing for VVT solenoids either. 5w30 is a good choice but with a turbo engine I'd be inclined to run Mobil1 over Castrol Edge as it has a higher viscosity index rating (it protects better at high temps).

Mobil 1 is also a true synthetic oil but edge is just as good. I have stopped using it since the price hike though and gone back to mobil 1.

Thicker oil doesnt necisarily equate to more hp it just means the engine can rev easier, its exactly the same theory behind using a lighter flywheel.

Edit. Yep thinner lol

Do you mean thinner? If an engine can rev easier it will in theory be making more hp lower in the rev range. It wont necessarily effect the peak HP.

Your confusing hp with torque :)

Hp is a product of torque so more torque = more hp so both are correct.

Nope I'm not confusing anything. A couple of vids that back up what I'm saying

Oh & it's "you're"

Those videos are blatant advertising. Do you really think what an oil company advertises is based on science? In other words those two little gears at your local parts shop that let you turn them to "feel" the difference, do you really think that’s an accurate demonstration?

Anyway it’s much more correct to say drag (thicker oil) effects torque. Saying it affects horsepower is like saying down shifting on a push bike makes me go faster because I can pedal faster...

Oooh lets all go out and buy 0w30 because you can gain a million killawasps!

And we wonder why so many "home mechanics" are doing big ends....

My oil pressure gauge doesnt work, just sometimes goes to 1/3 an then goes down completely, the car works fine, but I dont know how to fix the gauge, I remember when I change thoe oil after 10k kms, the gauge start working for some minutes, then it goes down as always, but just sometimes rises 1/3 and then goes down again.

comments?

Oil manometer is most likely to be faulty. You would need to drop into a mechanic to be certain though.

I think what winnie is trying to say is the sender unit is probably faulty
Part number 83520-34020 which supersedes to 83520-60050
100 & 200 series LandCruisers use the same sender so you should be able to find one locally or Nick will be able to sort you out.
